Amber Heard made her biggest move yet to quash suggestions that her divorce from Johnny Depp was about money, by revealing that she is set to donate her entire payout to charity. Last week it was revealed that after three months of gruelling negotiations and shocking domestic violence allegations from Amber’s camp – which saw Depp’s supporters speak out in his defence – that the one-time golden couple reached a divorce settlement through their lawyers. The agreement resulted in Amber dismissing her domestic violence restraining order against Johnny and her walking away with a $7 million dollar settlement.
Throughout their bitter battle, in which Amber presented pictures and video footage as evidence of Depp’s violence on numerous occasions throughout their marriage, Johnny’s lawyers retaliated by claiming that 30-year-old Amber was “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging domestic abuse”. However, in a final show that pocketing a hefty sum of cash was not her aim, the actress has announced that she’ll be donating the entire sum to help other women and children
in need. “The donation will be divided equally between the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), with a particular focus on helping defend battered women, and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where I have worked as a volunteer for the past 10 years,” she revealed in a statement. “Hopefully this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most,” she continued. She again emphasised that her motivation for ending her marriage to Johnny, from who she filed a domestic violence restraining order, had nothing to do with financial gain, stating: “Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.”
Though a successful actress in her own right, with turns in big-budget films including The Danish Girl and Magic Mike XXL, Amber’s star power is hugely overshadowed by Hollywood staple Depp, whose career has spanned decades. Many envisioned Amber attempting to bag a bigger slice of the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s substantial fortune – said to be in the region of $200 million dollars – as the pair, who met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2011 and were married for 15 months, did not have a prenuptial agreement. However, after the financial terms of their separation were agreed upon in a deal that was struck only a day before Amber’s petition for a restraining order against Johnny was set to go to trial, both stars appeared satisfied, releasing a joint statement in which they said that “neither party has made false accusations for financial gains”. It has also been revealed that the blonde will not be collecting any residuals from the hit films Depp made during their marriage, even though a lack of a prenup meant she would have been entitled to the profits.
Amber’s generous donation is a positive outcome to a testing three months which have left the stunning actress looking increasingly frail. She shocked the world when she filed documents to end her and Depp’s seemingly happy union in May, following an alleged fight at their LA home, in which she says the 53-year-old turned violent. She arrived at court days later to seek a protection order with a visibly bruised face, claiming her husband had thrown a cell phone at her. In recent week’s a video emerged of an argument between the then married pair – which Amber recorded on her phone – that saw Depp in a rage, slamming kitchen cabinets and appearing to smash a glass bottle. Other leaked photos showed that on a different occasion, the Alice Through the Looking Glass star sliced off the top of his finger and daubed offensive messages about Amber on a mirror, accusing her of having an affair with actor Billy Bob Thornton, whom she stars with in upcoming flick, London Fields, set to be released later this year. Depp also used a visual way to showcase his feelings towards his estranged wife, by altering a tattoo which was once a loving tribute to her. Initially reading ‘SLIM’, which was his nickname for Amber, he tweaked the inking to read ‘SCUM’. Meanwhile, his family and showbiz pals, including ex-partner Vanessa Paradis, ex-fiancée Winona Ryder and actor Paul Bettany, spoke out in Johnny’s defence, casting doubt on Amber’s allegations.
With a seemingly clean slate, Amber’s future looks bright as she’s hard at work in her biggest role to date as Mera in the forthcoming Justice League movie, and she’s been spotted out partying in London in recent days with fellow stars Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne. Will Johnny’s career fare so well? We’ll have to wait and see.
