Hollywood stars like Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep touched down in London for the BAFTAs, but it was Kate Middleton who demanded the most attention on the red carpet. In the run-up to the awards show, it was rumoured that members of the BAFTA academy were concerned that the Duchess of Cambridge could outshine the night’s nominees if she chose to attend, and it turns out that that may well have been the case!
As President of the BAFTAs, Prince William was on hand to present an award at the ceremony – the Fellowship Award to comedian Mel Brooks – and he brought his stunning wife with him. As the last guests to arrive at The Royal Albert Hall – which was only a short distance from their home at Kensington Palace – Kate arrived alongside Prince William to cheers from the crowd, wowing in an off-the-shoulder floral Alexander McQueen dress while her hair was twisted into an up-style, showcasing serious blingy earrings.
Red Carpet Shutdown
It’s said that the red carpet was shut down and cleared 30 minutes before the Royal couple even set foot on it, causing some A-listers, including Penelope Cruz and Manchester by the Sea actress Michelle Williams unable to have their full time in front of the cameras. A source said: “There was a lot of talk about ‘the Royal arrival’ and there was no messing about – in a matter of minutes the whole carpet was cleared of talent and their entourages.”
Once inside, the pair received a standing ovation as they took their seats and it appears that even the A-list are fans of K-Midd, with Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci spotted straining their necks to get a good glimpse of the future King and Queen of England. There was no chance of a selfie with the 35-year-old mother-of-two however, as BAFTA bosses are said to have issued strict prior warnings to the great and good of Hollywood to not ask the Royals for pictures!
‘Oops’ of the Night!
British fashion house Burberry was forced to apologise for an embarrassing Twitter gaffe at the BAFTAs which saw them mix up actor Dev Patel and rapper Riz Ahmed, who stars in the new season of hit HBO show Girls. Both Dev and Riz were dressed for the event by Burberry and the fashion brand boasted on its Twitter account that Lion star and BAFTA winner Dev was wearing one of their custom-made suits, but awkwardly shared a snap of Riz instead. They quickly corrected their mistake, but not before eagle-eyed Twitter users pointed it out. Awks!
She’s been the star of awards season 2017, and the BAFTAs were no different for Emma Stone as she picked up the Best Leading Actress gong for her hit film La La Land. However, the 28-year-old actress didn’t fare so well in the style stakes, with her Chanel outfit leaving fashion watchers divided as she wore matching trousers underneath her bejewelled gown. Perhaps she was wearing extra layers to battle the Blighty chill?
