All the Gossip, Drama & Style from the SAGs

It was a particularly low night for Jennifer Aniston on Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The former golden girl of Hollywood thought that the SAGs would be her shining moment, especially after she was robbed of an Oscar nomination, but unfortunately her dream turned out to be a ‘mare.

Aniston’s Fashion Fail
The 45-year-old turned heads for all the wrong reasons thanks to her plunging vintage Galliano gown. Rather than opt for an elegant number, Jen chose the standout frock to get attention, which she did, but she won’t be happy with the comments fashion critics made on social media. “You are too old and should have more class than to wear something like that,” blasted one, as another added, “Enough of the cleavage show, Jen. It’s not attractive. What are you trying to prove? You’re a very insecure person.”

Jen’s Celeb Stalker Alert
Jen’s night went from bad to worse when she lost out on the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role accolade. Of course, she put on her very best “I don’t mind” smile when Julianne Moore was announced as the winner, but the snub will almost certainly have added insult to injury.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Aniston, though, as she did win something at the SAG Awards – a new admirer. The always dashing Eddie Redmayne seemed extremely impressed by Jennifer when it came to his red carpet speech. “She’s absolutely beautiful” is how The Theory of Everything award-winner Eddie described Jennifer on the red carpet.

Aniston had previously been quoted as saying that Eddie and his film were her definite favourites among the contenders for the best movie and actor awards. Meanwhile, Eddie, who looked like a giddy schoolboy who’d been given the keys to the sweet shop, admitted he was a “devoted” Friends fan and that he’d “stalked” his way to meeting her at another awards ceremony recently, adding: “She’s everything you’d hope her to be.”

Why Giuliana Went Missing
Fans react as hostess suspected of skipping event to hide skeletal frame
As some of the world’s most beautiful women strutted onto the red carpet at the SAGs, one famous figure was conspicuous by her absence – Giuliana Rancic. The popular E! News reporter had been expected to be there doing what she does best, finding out which designer gowns were being worn and delving deep into the nominees’ psyches. But this year the 40-year-old was missing in action, as was her usual partner in crime, Ryan Seacrest, and her fans were up in arms about it.

Amateur Maria Menounos
One fan tweeted: “Where is #RyanSeacrest & #GiulianaRancic, miss them, they do the best red carpet, not thrilled so far”, as another posted, “Oh my goodness, #GiulianaRancic and #RyanSeacrest aren’t on this red carpet.

Their replacements, TV personalities Maria Menounos, Ross Mathews and Kelly Osbourne, were not at all well received, with viewers actively slating their performances. “Did you ever think anyone would make you miss Giuliana Rancic?” said one viewer as more chimed in on Twitter. “We miss you on the red carpet, Giuliana! The interviews are so awkward. It isn’t the same without you.” An especially biting blow for Menounos came on Instagram from a viewer who wrote: “Maria is an amateur and her awkward questions and long pauses only serve to highlight what a pro Giuliana is.”

Was “Rancid” Rancic Scared Away by haters?
One reason Mrs Rancic may have missed out on the big night is because of the extreme backlash she received after attending the Golden Globes earlier this month.

The mother-of-one was targeted by online trolls who claimed she was “skin and bones” and was “in need of a good meal”. The abuse, which included her being cruelly labelled “Giuliana Rancid”, could have led to the Fashion Police host taking a break from the spotlight until she feels comfortable on the red carpet again.

Watts the Dress, love!
Emma Stone almost floors Naomi Watts with her voluminous dress

They aren’t enemies, so it’s difficult for us to imagine why on Earth Emma Stone would try to embarrass Naomi Watts on such a grand stage.

As the main players from Birdman accepted the award for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture, Naomi, 46, stepped forward and tried to make her way to the microphone to give her thanks, but the overly crowded stage proved a dangerous stumbling ground for the actress. As she moved towards the front of the stage she got her heels caught in Emma’s Dior Couture dress train and very nearly kissed the floor! But thanks to her awesome cat-like balance, Naomi stayed on her feet and styled out the calamity with all the poise one would expect of a four-time SAG Awards nominee.

Sadly, her co-stars weren’t as cool under pressure and couldn’t hide their shock, as seen in their rather comical facial expressions.

Brits Ruled on the big night!
Major prizes went to Brits including Eddie Redmayne and the cast of Downton Abbey

The most hotly contended award of the night, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture, was picked up by humble Brit star Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything. He beat Steve Carell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Keaton.

Meanwhile, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series was scooped by William H Macy for his role in Shameless, an adaptation of a British show about life in a tough Manchester district. US shows Modern Family, Louie, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family were kicked to the kerb. Completing the UK awards hat-trick was the win for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, which was bagged by… you guessed it, right? Downton Abbey, natch! Condolences to Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland and House of Cards.

SAG Awards Trends
See which style crushes got the celebs noticed on the red carpet

Emma rocked a pretty piece

Tatiana kept her cuffs classy with diamonds

Ear Cuffs
Emma Stone and Keira Knightley were among the celebs who worked the ear cuff. Keira offset her Erdem pregnancy frock with these busy sparklers. We’re not convinced the fashion-forward combo suited her style, but Emma Stone rocked her triple ear cuff against a backdrop of Dior Couture, while Tatiana Maslany’s diamond set added extra edge to her modern Oscar de la Renta gown.

Reese Witherspoon

Julianna Margulies

Low-slung Ponytails
On the other side of the spectrum, Emma Stone, Julianna Margulies and Reese Witherspoon all opted for sleek, low ponytails which made an impact in the most subtle of ways. Ensuring all eyes were on their breathtaking gowns, this is a trend that has jumped straight from the red carpet to the mainstream.

The new mani
Laverne Cox, who plays prison hairstylist Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black, showed off her manicure and raved about US nail polish brand Caption. We’ll look out for stocks here and will let you know as soon as it arrives. It dries in seconds and fixes like a gel, but doesn’t need to be scratched off the way Shellac or Gelish does.
Championed by the likes of Camila Alves, Keira Knightley and Elizabeth Rodriguez, royal purple gowns reigned supreme on the red carpet this year. From Camila’s classy Donna Karan number and Keira’s tiered frock to Elizabeth’s one-shouldered stunner, their richly hued pieces offered the perfect pop of colour amid a sea of black.
