The RTA has announced that over 6,500 Dubai taxis have been fitted with surveillance cameras.
The initiative has been conducted "as part of its efforts to improve public transportation services, to monitor conduct of taxi drivers & verify their compliance with professional driving standards," according to a tweet from the Dubai Media Office.
By the end of this year, it's expected that all 10,221 Dubai Taxis will be fitted with the cameras.
“Surveillance cameras have been installed in about 6,500 taxis out of a total fleet comprising 10,221 cabs. The project will cover the remainder of taxis this year,” Adel Shakri, Director of Transportation Systems, at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said in a statement on the Dubai Media Office website.
Taxis have been fitted to ensure that driving meets RTA standards and both drivers and passengers maintain good moral conduct.
“The System aims to ensure the compliance of taxi drivers with the rules & principles of professional and moral conducts. It even motivates them to observe optimal attitudes towards users of the taxi service. The footage of these cameras can be retrieved in case of any violations reported during the taxi trips to eliminate any complaints from service beneficiaries,” Shakri went on to add.
