Sara Rahbar has her third solo exhibition in Dubai at Carbon 12

Sara Rahbar is a contemporary mixed media artist that beautifully combines all kinds of seemingly meaningless materials, to create expressive sculptures and other artworks in the process.

Rahbar, who was born in Iran, is particularly known for her successful flag series, a collection of artworks for which she used traditional fabric and objects, to create the American and Iranian flag. A collection of art that has gained her a lot of recognition around the world.

Rahbars' latest collection, titled Swarming, is currently being showcased at Carbon 12, as her third solo show in Dubai. Featuring different sculptures made of wheels, batons, shoes, weapons, shovels and more, Rahbar once again combined to create new things. An exhibition definitely worth visiting.

Ahlan! chats to the artist about her latest work, her thoughts on Dubai and what her art means to her:

Are you excited about coming back to exhibit in Dubai?
Yes, I've been working on this show for about 2 years, so I'm excited to finally be able to show the new work.

What do you love most about visiting the Emirates?
Carbon 12 :)

How did you come up with the idea for the Swarming series?
Swarming is the name of one of one of the pieces in the show. The series is called 206 bones. It's the number of bones in our body.

How long does it take for you to complete a piece?
There is no specific timeline for a piece. It could take a week and it could take 2 years. I work very organically & intuitively. I can't control or force it.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

How would you describe your artistic style?
I don't have any specific style, I'm always in a state of transformation. I don't like to stick to any one style or way of seeing & making work.

If you weren't an artist, what would your profession be?
I can't imagine doing anything else.

Which other art form would you like to master?
Mastering is not my goal. I just want to make work for as long as I possibly can, & in the process, learn and grow.

Out of all the pieces you've done, which one is your favourite?
Stay & nothing left to win, nothing left to lose.

One piece of advice for aspiring artists...
Believe in yourself and in your work & never ever stop working.
