Ahlan! Brings you all the goss from the Dubai Cares and Oxfam Charity Gala. 'One Night to Change Lives'.
Set beneath the splendor of the Burj Khalifa in the gardens of Dubai's prestigious Armani hotel. A galaxy of stars including Colin Firth and his wife Livia, Kristin Davis, Rooney Mara and Freida Pinto brought their glamour to a magical evening at the ‘One Night to Change Lives’ charity gala hosted by the Dubai International Film Festival in aid of UAE-based philanthropic organisation, Dubai Cares, and global development and aid agency, Oxfam. First along the red carpet was Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto who was dressed to impress in a red Valentino gown, she was closely followed by long-time Oxfam supporters the one and only Mr. Darcy aka Colin Firth and wife Livia and last but not least every girl's wannabe best friend Kristin Davis who lit up the red carpet in her Black Dior number.
Although it began to rain, it did nothing to dampen Oscar-Winner Colin Firth’s spirit who began the evening's proceedings by entertaining the crowd with tales of his Saturday job at his local Oxfam store. He joked about how the purchase of his first record (T-Rex) opened-up his love affair with the charity and defined his future music tastes, not for the better we think Colin. SATC actress Kristin Davis took to the stage to present a video she had put together with Oxfam to show just how guests could help to make a difference. The Oxfam ambassador was interrupted in her speech by the start of the Dubai fountains, this made her laugh and she said “How magical they were” (Yes Kristin, indeed they are).
The highlight of the evening came in the form of the charity auction; Freida Pinto modelled the Chopard Imperiale watch which she almost broke when it became stuck on her wrist. Livia Firth auctioned a fashionista’s dream by offering a ‘Valentino for the Green Carpet Challenge’ which included her Oscar 2012 gown and a personal day with vogue Italian editor, Franca Sozzani, we so wanted to bid for that!
A rapturous applause came when Colin Firth announced he was auctioning the Paul Smith dinner jacket off his back to the highest bidder, yes please Colin. At which point to our excitement he ran into the audience and charged 3700 Dhs a hug to female bidders, we desperately put our Dirhams together to bid. The Bridget Jones actor then announced “If the bid is high enough I will take it off right here and now” The dinner jacket went for a whopping 52000 Dhs, sadly not enough for Colin to strip.
After Rooney Mara drew the raffle prize of an exclusive stay at the Villa Pearl, it was time for guests to dance the night away under the Dubai stars. The evening raised in excess of 1800000 Dhs. Good work Dubai. We can’t wait for next years.
