An award-winning movie is being shown at a free screening in Dubai today (15 January). Boy, by Oscar-nominated Taika Waititi, will be followed by a talk by its producer Cliff Curtis. Best-known for his roles in The Piano, Whale Rider, Colombiana, Three Kings and Training Day, Cliff will be at a Q&A session after the screening, which is being arranged by The Scene Club.

Boy is set in 1984 on the rural East Coast of New Zealand. Michael Jackon’s Thriller is changing kids’ lives at the time and Boy is a dreamer who loves Jacko. He lives with his brother Rocky, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan.

Boy’s other hero, his father Alamein, is the subject of Boy’s fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep-sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson, when in reality he’s in prison. When Alamein returns home after seven years, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.

Boy has scooped top prizes including the Audience Award for Best International Feature Film at AFI Fest in Los Angeles and has become the highest-grossing New Zealand film of all time. We recommend you catch it!
