Traffic police have installed 204 new radars on various roads in Abu Dhabi to help prevent accidents and improve road safety.

The new speed radars were fixed on both highways and internal roads of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain during the first eight months of 2014 to help catch errant motorists, police have said.

Mohammed Al Junaibi, Acting Director of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety at Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said 142 radars had been placed in Abu Dhabi and 62 in Al Ain.

He noted the radars had been installed at areas which had been found to be more prone to violations and accidents which had on many occasions led to the loss of life.

“The increase in the number of radars is part of a comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety based on elements like architecture, awareness, control, assessment and quick response,” he said.

The radars were fixed specifically to catch speeding motorists, poor lane discipline and overtaking on the hard shoulder.
