An Abu Dhabi-backed documentary has absolutely dominated the Emmys
Free Solo, made by husband and wife team filmmaker Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and world-renowned photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin, has had a spectacular 2019.
The documentary, co-produced by Abu Dhabi’s Image Nation and National Geographic, claimed seven awards at this year’s Emmys, including Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Programme, Outstanding Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Picture Editing, Music Composition and Best Achievement in Interactive Media.
Free Solo follows free-climber Alex Honnold as he prepares to climb the El Capitan rock in Yosemite National Park, boasting a win across all its nominated categories, adding to its previous wins at this year’s Academy Awards and the BAFTAS.
The couple’s other project, Meru, is the highest grossing independent documentary film of 2015, winning the US Audience Documentary Award at the Sundance Film Festival and making the Oscars Shortlist in 2016.
