A-List Support For Serena Williams Following Controversial US Open Loss

This weekend, the world watched as Serena Williams was handed a series of penalties US Open final loss against Naomi Osaka. However, the tennis ace’s professionalism during the prize giving ceremony lead to a number of her A-list friends taking to social media to show their support.

Importantly, many of them also thanked her for continuing the fight for equality, as Serena accused chair umpire Carlos Ramos of sexism, as many male athletes have been able to speak to umpires with similar force in the past, facing no penalties.

Kelly Rowland, who was in fact seated in Serena's box along with actress La La Anthony during the match, was among the first to applaud her actions on Instagram.

"SERENA!!! CLASS ACT!! ALWAYS A CHAMPION!!!!" the former Destiny's Child star wrote alongside an image of her pal. "I (LOVE) YOU!!! WE ALL (LOVE) YOU!!! (The Ump (sic) was a weak soul, what a double standard!!!!) #BS"

The post prompted Empire star Taraji P. Henson to comment, "THE MF TRUTH!!!"

Alicia Keys, who was also in attendance at the finals, also heaped praise on the athlete, writing, "@serenawilliams You are THE epitome of grace and prowess!!! You are an inspiration to all of us. Your purpose to be a leader and a light is a gift to the world!! We love you and thank you for sharing your greatness and spirit ! Congratulations Queen!!!"

And Ciara added, "Proud of my friend @SerenaWilliams for standing up and being strong tonight. A true inspiration to many of us women. A new day is coming. #Equality".

Nicki Minaj also posted a tribute to Serena.

Tennis star Billie Jean King also commented on the match, stating, "When a woman is emotional, she’s “hysterical” and she’s penalized for it. When a man does the same, he’s “outspoken” & and there are no repercussions. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same."

Andy Roddick also commented on the refereeing...

The on-court confrontation has since landed Serena a $17,000 (Dhs62,432.50) fine from officials at the United States Tennis Association governing body, drawing further criticism from social media users.

Actress America Ferrera retweeted a news article about the financial penalty on Sunday and remarked, "When a woman dares to act as men are allowed to... she pays for it.

"#TimesUp on this BS," she concluded, referencing the ongoing movement against sexual misconduct and inequality.
