A! List Hotel Review: Como Metropolitan London
Central London is filled with buzzing hotels that are frequented by guests navigating the fabulous shopping scene, star-studded events like Fashion Week and business types passing through the capital.
But rare is it to find a place that offers all the perks of glamorous people-watching while making sure you check out feeling more relaxed than when you walked in.
Como Metropolitan London offers the best of both worlds; allowing those checking in to start the day with breakfast at celebrity hotspot Nobu, end the night with a sweet-smelling soak in a deep tub, and enjoy the convenience of a short walk to plush Knightsbridge or Hyde Park in between.
Also known simply as The Met, the hotel was formerly home to The Met Bar that Kate Moss, the Spice Girls and Cher were often pictured emerging from in the 90s, but the old watering hole is now open grill eatery Gridiron.
After warming up by the glass front fireplace in the trendy lobby lounge, Ahlan! arrived at one of the eight Park Suites in this 144-room Old Park Lane property that we called home for the weekend. Decked out with a colourful chaise-lounge and armchair, we were welcomed by incredibly calming green views anyone could easily forget London provides.
With complimentary tea and coffee facilities on the mirrored mini-bar (it’s also filled with plenty of snacks, drinks and toiletries at an additional charge), it’s the ideal spot to watch the world go by if you’re not tempted to switch on the TV.
Upon entering the bedroom, lined with large windows that provide astonishingly clear views into the hotel next door, Ahlan! was swept away by how quintessentially London this accommodation was.
Although guests can feel totally immersed in the UK city from the moment of waking in the crisp white 400-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets on the Frette-clad king size bed, it’s just as easy to close off from the world at the click of the button.
Thanks to a 2015 revamped, rooms and suites at this 22-year-old property come with remote controlled blinds and curtains, audio from the second large TV is optional in the bathroom, and touch screen telephones provide instant access to staff around the hotel who wear stylish uniforms by Emporio Armani or Armani Exchange.
Cosy robes and slippers keep toes toasty after a bath with Como Shambhala salts and soaps, plus there’s even a yoga channel (mats are provided in the wardrobe) for that extra opportunity to unwind.
Eager to continue on the wellness path? Don’t miss out on the full English breakfast in The White Room, a private dining concept accessible via the Robert De Niro-founded Nobu restaurant, but pair it with one of the Shambhala Cuisine juices from the Como Metropolitan’s chef. Ahlan tried to Liver Flush, a concoction containing cayenne pepper, turmeric and garlic, that’s not easily downed but incredibly cleansing.
Complete the experience by sweating it out in the gym or booking a detoxifying treatment in the spa to return from London feeling surprisingly zen.
