A-List Eid Break: Paris

A-List Eid Break: Paris

26 Sep 2013

There’s a never-ending list of things to do and see in Paris, but we’ve done the hard work for you and selected the top five!

1.Le Meurice
If it’s good enough for Beyoncé…
When Beyoncé, Jay-Z and little Blue Ivy visit Paris, they make a beeline for Le Meurice. They’ve stayed in the suites at the hotel on several occasions, including Jay-Z’s 38th birthday, which set them back $20,000 (Dhs73,460) per night! The hotel is located in the heart of Paris, just off the Champs Élysées and opposite the Jardin des Tuileries, which stretches from the Louvre to the Place de la Concorde. We love the Spa Valmont and the pre-loaded iPods that can be borrowed from the reception if you feel like joining the joggers and power-walkers on the Champs Élysées! The late Liz Taylor also stayed at Le Meurice when visiting Paris. INFO: Rooms start from €680 (Dhs3,250) per night, Le Meurice, Rue de Rivoli, Paris, www.lemeurice.com

2. Shakespeare and Company
Paris’ most beloved bookstore
Shakespeare and Company, founded in 1951, is definitely not your average book shop. The former owner, the late George Whitman, lived by the motto: “Be not inhospitable to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise”, and offered lodging to aspiring writers and nomads, transforming the store into a refuge for authors. Jeremy Mercer wrote Time Was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn at Shakespeare & Co about his time at the book shop, and George himself published Tumbleweed Hotel, a compilation of short stories by writers who had stayed at the shop. Books are extremely reasonably priced and there are readings by authors every Monday at 7pm. INFO: Shakespeare and Company, Rue de la Bûcherie, near Notre Dame, Paris, www.shakespeareandcompany.com

3.Caviar Kaspia
The ultimate decadent dining experience
Caviar Kaspia was opened in Paris in 1927 by Arcady Fixon and has been a star magnet ever since. The list of celebrities who have visited includes Diane Kruger, Nicole Richie, Mischa Barton, Dita Von Teese, David and Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes. The interior is lavishly decorated with antique paintings and chinaware, and there’s a fantastic view of the streets of Place de la Madeleine. Remember to reserve a table in advance. INFO: From €79 (Dhs 377) to €1,262 (Dhs6,030) for Béluga Royal caviar, 12pm-1am (12am on Sat) Mon-Sat, 17 Place de la Madeleine, www.kaspia.fr

4. The VIP Room
Dance the night away at Dubai’s twin club. They don’t call it the VIP Room for nothing! With clientele including Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Rihanna and Karl Lagerfeld, you wouldn’t want to miss out on this clubbing experience. After opening in Dubai, the VIP Room is as popular as ever. The club is spread over two levels, and there are often big-name acts on stage – Nicki Minaj performed there in the spring. Dress to the nines, because the bouncers are very selective… and take your plastic. Drinks are not cheap – a magnum of voddy costs €500 (Dhs2,390). INFO: 11.30pm onwards (dependent on events) Thu-Sat, VIP Room Theatre Paris, 188 Rue de Rivoli, Paris, www.viproom.fr
