5 things to do between now and the next Ahlan!
See all the Action & Janet Jackson at Dubai World Cup
The biggest sporting event in Dubai’s social calendar is back at Meydan Racecourse. The daytime activities centre around showing off new hats (and hoping they keep the searing sun at bay), seeing who wins the world’s richest horse race with a prize pot of $1m and the Jaguar Style Stakes, in which contenders can bag free car-hire hours if their outfits impress the judges enough. Pop-up bars in Apron Views include the Bubble Lounge, and making its debut alongside it, Barasti, while the Meydan Hotel hosts some very swanky VIP experiences with superior course views and premium food and drinks packages, where you’re likely to rub shoulders with some stars. Hollywood legend Bo Derek, Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai, former footballers Vinnie Jones and Michael Owen, and actresses Denise Van Outen and Laura Carmichael (y’know, Lady Edith from Downton Abbey) have all been guests previously. In the evening, there’s a grand parade, fireworks and a live show; this time around Janet Jackson will take the mic. INFO: Tickets cost from Dhs25 per person for access to public areas, where children under 12 will be admitted free, and in private areas they start from Dhs450 for Apron Views, up to Dhs3,250 for The Terrace, 04 327 2110, dubaiworldcup.com; visit meydanhotels.com/dwc for all packages at The Meydan Hotel
See Billy Ocean in Dubai
This weekend, Eighties legend Billy Ocean will be sharing a tennis stadium with Dubai regulars UB40 (featuring Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue – because with two UB40s floating around these days, it’s good to clarify). Ocean has sold over 30 million records in his lifetime, going Gold and Platinum across the world with number-one hits in the US, Australia, Germany, Holland and the UK. Amazingly, though, our favourite, Love Really Hurts Without You, only made it to number two in the UK and US. Caribbean Queen fared better, reaching the top slot in the States and winning Billy a Grammy for Best R’n’B Vocals. And who could forget When the Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going), the soundtrack to the 1986 movie The Jewel of the Nile starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. We reckon he’ll sing them all, so get outta your dreams, get into your car, and go and watch him! INFO: Dhs225 person, tickets available from The Irish Village, theirishvillage.com, Virgin Megastores, tickets.virginmegastore.me, ticket-line.ae, platinumlist.net and tixbox.com; doors open 7pm, show starts 9pm, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, Garhoud, Dubai
Join the Easter Bunnies
If you love chocolate, it’s your week! Across the UAE there will be choccy eggs galore, along with blow-out brunches to mark Easter weekend. Here’s a taster of what’s on offer…
Aquaventure, Atlantis, The Palm
Fancy joining a record-breaking egg hunt with a bit of a twist? A whopping 50,000 eggs will be released into the rapids at Aquaventure Waterpark; these foam eggs can then be gathered and swapped at an ‘eggschange’ for real sweets, so you can leave with armfuls of goodies. INFO: Advance booking Dhs305 per adult/Dhs260 per child, entry on the day Dhs365 per adult/Dhs320 per child. Special rates available online for UAE residents; starts 8am; Atlantis, The Palm, 04 426 1000, atlantisthepalm.com/92easter
Funusual Easter Brunch, Accents
In addition to the regular spread, known for its quirky plant-pot desserts, the little ones can try a spot of egg painting with the chefs. INFO: Dhs295 with soft drinks, Dhs395 with house drinks, Dhs525 with bubbles, Dhs695 with premium French bubbles, 1pm-4pm, Accents, InterContinental Dubai Marina, 04 446 6777, icmarinadining.com/easter
Feast Brunch, Sheraton Grand
Feast’s brunch welcomes diners on a culinary tour of the world with cooking stations transporting guests to the streets of Malaysia, the villages in northern India and a grand French chateau. This week, it’s adding Easter-themed cake-pops, cookies and cupcakes to the menu, too. INFO: Dhs325 with soft drinks, Dhs425 with house drinks, Dhs595 with bubbly, 1pm-4pm, Feast, Sheraton Grand Hotel, Dubai, 04 503 4300, sheratongranddubai.com
The Perfect Lads’ Night Out?
Is it your turn to plan date night? YOTS Sports Lounge in Dubai Yacht Club is offering the sort of Thursday night out that most men would relish. It starts with happy hour from 5pm to 7pm with house drinks at just Dhs25. Then for Dhs99, from 7pm to 11pm, you can partake in unlimited ribs and gourmet chips, which we’re told are “perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.” Sounds ideal for soaking up all those happy drinks! INFO: Dubai Marina Yacht Club, 04 362 7900, dubaimarinayachtclub.com
Do a 180° Turn at 360°
Enjoy unlimited drinks, dim sum, sushi and deluxe bar snacks at 360° with its new 180° ‘night brunch’. The lights and tables are low, the music’s blasting and you’re welcome to get up for a spin between courses. The nigiri, dumplings, fish cakes and spring rolls make perfect club food; the satay chicken drumsticks are less easy to handle in the dark, especially after a few of those expertly prepared cocktails. Don’t forget to accessorise with a napkin! INFO: Dhs295, 7pm-10pm, 055 5008515, 360@jumeirah.com, jumeirah.com
