5 Great Ways to Give This Ramadan

Bags of goodness
If you’re ready to part with any of your designer handbags, Dubai Ladies’ Club is kicking off its annual Donate Your Bag appeal during Ramadan. All of the donated handbags – as well as designer sunglasses, belts and jewellery – will be sold in a special charity sale in 2012. The money raised will be donated to Dubai Cares.

Give while you shop
Several leading malls are running their Make A Difference This Ramadan appeal again. When you go shopping, simply take any everyday items you are willing to donate to the needy people of this region – anything  from clothing and mobile phones to books and reading glasses – and leave them in the collection boxes that will be prominently located in the malls. At the end of the month-long appeal, all collected items will be handed over to the Red Crescent for distribution to those who are truly in need.

INFO: All Majid Al Futtaim malls are participating: Mall of the Emirates, Mirdif City Centre, Deira City Centre, Sharjah City Centre and Ajman City Centre. The appeal runs throughout August.

Walk for good
Yalla Walk was born to help the needy while promoting exercise. The premise is as simple as a walk in the park: registered participants turn up at one of the parks listed below, are issued with personal pedometers and start walking. The further you walk, the more money you raise. Funds will be provided through Al Maktoum Foundation and Al Fattan Properties and distributed to major local charities.

INFO: To participate, register online at yallawalk.com or phone Dubai Municipality on 800 900. Yalla Walk will take place throughout August at Al Safa, Al Mamzar, Al Barsha, Al Khawaneej and Zabeel Parks.

Eat, drink and be generous
Volunteer In Dubai is hosting a fundraising iftar at a private venue in Jumeirah on 24 August. As well as a lush iftar buffet there will be a raffle with more than 100 prizes worth a total of Dhs30,000 to give away.

All proceeds will be distributed to Volunteer In Dubai charities. This is not only a chance to donate but also an opportunity to get to know one of Dubai’s leading voluntary organisations.

INFO: Tickets cost Dhs100 per person and reservations are essential . To book visit www.volunteerindubai.com

Box clever
When it was started four years ago by Radisson Blu Hotel in Media City, the Shoe Box Appeal struck an instant chord and its popularity has grown every year since. The idea is simple: you collect a box from one of the participating hotels and fill it with items from the list provided: toothpaste, t-shirts, caps and shaving cream among them. The boxes are distributed to the labourers who  build our country and keep it running – a great way of saying ‘thank you’.

INFO: Now called The Box Appeal, the campaign will run from 15 August to 15 September. For a list of locations and for more information, visit www.facebook.comltheboxappeal.
