South African Mari de Villiers hits the surf as soon as the sun comes up

My Fitness Fix
“I enjoy getting out on my paddleboard to go flat-water paddling when the sea is calm or surfing, when there are some waves. I try to get out at least once or twice a week, and again on the weekend. It’s a great way to exercise and spend some time outdoors. A stand up paddling session around the Burj Al Arab is usually a good hour of exercise.”

Why I love it
“Paddleboarding helps me relax. It might be a serious cardio and muscular workout, but thanks to all the sunshine and fresh air I feel refreshed when I finish. The sea is such a beautiful environment to work out in that it beats any gym.”

Why you’ll love it
“Spending time on a board at the beach is so much fun, it doesn’t feel like exercise. The sport is also easy to learn, so first timers can be out enjoying the waves with their friends quite quickly. And if that’s not enough, it gives your body a serious workout – you use your arm muscles to paddle, plus stomach, quads and glutes for balance.” For more details visit surfschooluae.com. Sessions from Dhs125 per person.

Calories burnt per hour paddleboarding: 500.
