Who’s Dissing Taylor Swift Now?
First it was Katy Perry’s thinly veiled Twitter remarks back in September. Then Perry’s boyfriend Diplo waded in on the action, setting up a Kickstarter campaign to ‘get Taylor a new booty’. But this time around, the Tay-Tay hate is coming from an unusual source… veteran folk singer Joni Mitchell!
Back in April 2012, the Shake It Off singer was in talks to play the music legend in the movie adaptation of Girls Like Us. The film is set to cover the impact of iconic female musicians including Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King. Swift has never kept her admiration for the folk singer a secret, telling Rolling Stone magazine: “I used to cry about Joni Mitchell all the time… All my friends would know, once I started crying about Joni Mitchell, it was time for me to go to bed.”
But in spite of Variety reporting the star’s involvement, Swift was never offered the role, saying, “I’ve been reading scripts for five years, and you just don’t know what ones are going to get greenlit and which ones aren’t, so I can’t talk about it unless it’s the real thing.”
However, Mitchell has now told her side of the story to the UK’s Sunday Times, explaining once and for all why Swift is unlikely to play her any time soon. “I squelched that. I said to the producer, ‘All you’ve got is a girl with high cheekbones.’” Mitchell has also made no bones about her thoughts on the storyline, too. “There’s a lot of nonsense about me in books… assumptions, assumptions, assumptions.”
