Who are we to pass up an open audition?

When we heard pop band Steps was adding a Dubai concert date to their sell-out tour, we were ecstatic. And when we then heard they were having local auditions for dancers, we knew we had to swing by and give our inner ‘90s pop star dreams a go. Perhaps a band member would fall ill and we’d be asked to replace them (fortunately, shocking karaoke footage of Deputy Editor Farah performing at Kung has not yet leaked online).

Ahlan!’s headed to Dubai Opera where we were joined by over 70 professional dancers from across the UAE. The dancers, through a rigorous elimination process, auditioned for Steps band member Lisa Scott-Lee and hubby Johnny Shentall (formerly from pop band Hear’Say).  Check out what happened here..

Okay, so we knew we didn’t stand a chance against the professionals, but it was still fascinating to watch the talented dancers move their bodies in ways we could only dream of. The 70 dancers were shortlisted to 10, and videos of their auditions were sent to the Steps band members and management in London for final approval.

The good news is that Team Ahlan! did get to perform with Steps. Well, sort of. Lisa agreed to give us a private dance lesson to the band’s recent single, Scared of the Dark. Conclusion? We couldn’t even get the most basic steps down. We were officially dreadful. Even Lisa was appalled by our moves.

One thing Lisa is excited about, however, is performing with her bandmates here in the UAE. “We’ve had a massive year, especially in the UK, with the new album and arena tour,” she told Ahlan! “For me, Dubai is my home, I’ve been living here for seven years, so it’s really special for me to be able to finally perform here with Steps,” she added.

And we can’t wait either. Fortunately for Steps, we’ll be busting our moves in the front row of their Dubai Opera concert on 27 April, free of charge. Pleasure, guys.
