The Black Eyed Peas: The TRUTH About Fergie & Nicole
Ready for the return of The Black Eyed Peas? So are we! However, you may notice the line-up has changed a bit since we last saw them. Rumours recently did the rounds that Fergie was possibly leaving the band, and that Nicole Scherzinger was replacing her. And now Ahlan! can reveal what’s REALLY going. We spoke to The Black Eyed Peas (will.i.am, Taboo and apl.de.ap), who celebrate 20 years together as a band, ahead of their concert at the opening ceremony of the 2017 UEFA Champions League presented by Pepsi.
HI GUYS! SO, FESS UP... WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH FERGIE?
Will.i.am: Since the beginning of Black Eyed Peas, we’ve always had amazing vocalists that appeared on the mic with us. People like Macy Gray, Esthero, Debi Nova, Fergie. On Elephunk, there were several females that appeared on that album. Obviously Fergie was the featured female, but on songs like Let’s Get it Started, it’s Noelle (Scaggs), and then Fergie, songs like Latin Girls, it’s Debi Nova, and Request Line, it’s Macy Gray. We’ll always work with good females.
IS FERGIE BEING REPLACED?
W: As for replacing, what people know The Black Eyed Peas to be, nobody is replacing Fergie. She’s working on her solo project at the moment, we’re on this brand-new experience, celebrating 20 years of Black Eyed Peas putting out music. We worked on a bunch of songs on her solo record, we’re proud that she has her label, but Black Eyed Peas are pushing it forward in terms of content, technology and experiences on our new project, Masters of the Sun.
WE’RE A BIT SAD NICOLE SCHERZINGER WON’T BECOME A BLACK EYED PEA…
W: Nicole is on the new BEP project as well. I don’t want to go into details how she’s involved yet.
GOOD TO HEAR. YOU’VE ALL BEEN TO DUBAI BEFORE. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF IT?
Taboo: For the last four or five years I’ve been visiting frequently, and it’s a great place to perform. Individually and as a group, we’ve always got a lot of love there, so we’ll always go there.
W: I want to go back, so if you know of anyone who wants to book The Black Eyed Peas (laughs).
apl.de.ap: I’d like to go back because there are a lot of Filipinos in the UAE!
WHAT’S IT BEEN LIKE WORKING WITH PEPSI FOR THE LAST DECADE?
W: We’ve always been dreamers, and the first time I ever saw the Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial, I never thought it would be possible to collaborate with Pepsi. It was monumental. Michael Jackson proved that if you could accomplish [that level of success], you’d be selected to rock with Pepsi. And it’s an honour. Ten years ago, BEP went on a global tour with Pepsi, so to be here, at the opening ceremony of the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final a decade later, shows our longevity as a group.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHT BEING IN THE BLACK EYED PEAS?
W: In my head, it’s when I’m about to go on stage, and looking across, and seeing my best friends. We’re still in each other’s lives in a major way. I remember the times when we didn’t have it. It was just a dream. So, being here today with my best friends is a dream come true. It’s the ultimate idea of happiness. I remember touring on my own, and as excited as it was, I didn’t really like that experience. I like being with my friends. The moments before we go on stage are the highlight.
T: We’ve had a lot of monumental moments that stand out, but for me this is just the beginning of the exciting journey that continues. Three years ago I suffered from a crazy illness that had me in bed for 12 weeks. I couldn’t move or perform, so being back on stage is a blessing.
A: Oh, please! Taboo’s being humble. He was diagnosed with cancer three years ago and he beat it!
T: The most important thing is that I get to celebrate life with my best friends and continue the journey of living and appreciating every moment.
A: For me, coming from humble beginnings [in the Philippines] and being sponsored to go over to the US as a kid, and meeting my best friends, will.i.am and Taboo, and starting Black Eyed Peas – that was monumental. Doing the opening ceremony for UEFA will be another milestone in our career.
W: We’ve had some amazing moments, like World Cups, UEFA concerts, Superbowl, the Philippines when the whole country honoured Apple, Grammy’s, stadiums three nights in a row, opening up for the Rolling Stones and U2. But this will be the first time the three of us play a massive stadium like this.
FERGIE RESPONDS TO AHLAN!’S STORY
Still confused? So are we. Considering Taboo unfollowed Fergie on social media when it was revealed she wouldn’t be working on the new BEP project, and the fact that will.i.am confirmed to us that she was out of the band, we thought that was that. However, Fergie’s spokesperson released a press statement, claiming: “Fergie is still in the Black Eyed Peas and has an enormous amount of love for her brothers. However, she’s currently focusing on her solo record in partnership with BMG and she’s incredibly excited for her fans to hear her new music.” We smell tension…
