Rana Al Kassim
This interior designer turned her back on a career in television to follow her passion for colours, patterns, textures and furniture. Although just over a year old, her fledgling company is one of the most sought after in the UAE for well-heeled clients looking to give their homes and premises an interior makeover.
What’s been your biggest achievement in 2012?
Making the transition in careers from television to interior design was a big change and then growing my business and getting the trust of my clients to allow me to design their homes.
Tell us about the project you are most proud of.
I am proud of every project I do. But a memorable one would have to be for du. We were inspired by the tree of life from the du adverts and had flower arrangements everywhere.
So who do you work for?
There are many celebrities – who I really cannot mention by name – and many corporate clients, including La Coquette, Lauren Vidal and Rev Devji.
What’s your style?
I love colour and enjoy using it in my projects, but sometimes simple is also beautiful. But it’s vital that I keep the client’s style in mind – there’s no point choosing orange when the client wants white.
What do you love most about being an interior designer?
Changing a negative space into a positive one – and seeing the joy that that gives my clients.
Where do you get your design inspiration from?
My biggest hobby is shopping. I’m always interested in the latest fashion trends and styles – sometimes they give me ideas for new curtain designs or a sofa’s colours and shapes.
