Qatar Restaurant Review:
JW’s Steakhouse At The Doha Marriott

JW’s has to be one of the comfiest restaurants in Doha.

You’re seated at a big old chair, a piano tinkling sweetly in the background as you survey a menu dominated by cuts of prime USDA certified Angus beef.

While JW’s has recently had a spruce up – the walls are now a deep cherry red and there are arty photos of cows – the management has stayed true to the restaurant’s ethos of classic, no-nonsense steakhouse fare.

After navigating through the oversized menus, my friend and I are given a flowerpot of hot bread, with two baby flowerpots on the side for butter. It’s a novel presentation and the bread would make anyone want to abandon a low carb diet on the spot.

For an appetiser, I indulge in one of my fave dishes – Oysters Rockefeller – and am happy with the choice. The half dozen oysters are topped with a generous portion of parmesan, cheddar and spinach, making it a little hard to taste the shellfish, but they are so deliciously crunchy, I really don’t care.

For mains, it has to be steak. Even though there are other options, the beef choices are just too good – filet mignon and New York strip in two different sizes, rib eye or T-bone. We both opt for the smaller filet mignon (180g as opposed to 280g). All mains come with a choice of one side, so I order asparagus with hollandaise sauce while my friend goes for simple classic steak fries.

When the steaks arrive, they are round orbs, juicy and plump as you could hope for, with pepper sauce as ordered in little accompanying pots. We enjoy them immensely. The asparagus is crunchy and delightful, but I wish at this point that the side options included a few more greens in among the four different kinds of potatoes.

We order home-style desserts – apple pie and chocolate layer cake – both a generous end to a big meal.

Overall, especially given the number of new steakhouses popping up all over Doha, JW’s is definitely a fab choice for a hearty, wonderfully presented steak dinner in upmarket surrounds.
