Lady Gaga is known for her outrageous style and her controversial public appearances, but recently she has been turning her life around. She has cleaned up, put on weight and even started dressing more conservatively! Is this because she has started work on her next album or are things getting serious with her new man? We caught up with her to find out.
Following in the lines of Elvis, Michael Jackson and Madonna, Lady Gaga has made a huge impact in her four short years in the fame game. But like others before her, success has come with a price. The singer has suffered problems with her weight, and although she denied having an eating disorder, in 2009 alone she was reportedly hospitalised six times because of her yo-yo dieting. In 2010 her ex-tour manager David Ciemny went public about her condition, saying she was, “physically and mentally sick.”
Her record label even told the singer to gain weight. The singer, who has been under pressure to look perfect since she sprung into the limelight in 2008 with her hit album The Fame, ended up turning to drugs.
“I did bags and bags of co***ne,” she said. “But I was able to stop, because I was panicking more on the drugs than I was sober. So, I’m fine now.”
As well as getting clean, the Poker Face singer is now looking a more healthy weight. She has also been dressing more like a lady, swapping her garish ensembles for gowns at events.
Talking about fashion she says, “For me it’s important to always keep that connection with my fans. No matter what I’m wearing, whether it’s high fashion and it was on the runway last week or it’s a leather jacket I found in a vintage shop, I need to create things and wear things that they can always replicate.”
The reason for her sudden change could be her developing relationship with Vampire Diaries actor Taylor Kinney, 30. The singer, 25, who normally hides behind her alter ego when in public, has been spotted smiling more, and kissing and holding hands with her man. The couple met while filming her music video You & I and have been spotted together frequently since, despite interference from Taylor’s ex girlfriend Brittany Sackett, who has reportedly been acting jealous since the couple went public.
“It was just casual at first, but things are getting pretty hot and heavy,” a source said. It seems Taylor is a big support for Lady Gaga, as she recently tweeted, “It’s at times like this I wish you could crawl into bed with me and cuddle. You remind me everything will always be ok.”
Career wise Lady Gaga is also doing fantastically. In the recent Forbes surveys, Lady Gaga was declared the highest earning celebrity of last year, earning Dhs330 million, plus she was named number 11 on the Most Powerful Women chart. And this success is only going to continue, as she has already started work on a new album, only months after releasing Born This Way - The Collection, which she is considering giving away free.
Speaking about the album she says, “I’ve been working on that. I’ve been planning the next tour, which keeps me very excited and busy because I have lots of new ideas, and I know exactly how I want it to look.”
The American singer songwriter seems to be slowly ditching her alter-ego. Perhaps the real woman behind the mask, Stefani Germanotta, will make a return before long.
Before Stefani re-invented herself to become Lady Gaga, she was a typical girl-next-door with brunette hair and a normal fashion style. However this failed to grab attention on the New York club scene so she reinvented herself, starting with minimizing her clothes and vamping up her look. But it was when she dyed her hair platinum blonde that she really started to get noticed.
Another celebrity who used this tactic is Madonna. We reported last week that the Material Girl singer is making a comeback with a 30th anniversary concert at the 2012 London Olympics. The singers have clashed in the past over claims that Lady Gaga copied Madonna by ripping off Madge’s hit song Express Yourself for her Born This Way.
Madge may be threatened by Lady Gaga’s success and is launching her big comeback tour to steal back her Queen of Pop crown. But should Lady Gaga be threatened? She says no.
“She’s wonderful and inspiring and liberating, and she’s certainly inspired my album,” Lady Gaga says. “If anything, it’s more annoying to me that people would insinuate that I don’t like to be compared to her.”
It doesn’t look like there’s going to be a fight for the crown just yet, guys!
