Nicole Richie is a big fan of the “power” of make-up.

The 36-year-old, who was recently named the face of Urban Decay’s Naked Petite Heat palette, isn’t a big cosmetics wearer on a daily basis.

But when it comes to a red carpet appearance or a big event in her personal life, Nicole enjoys applying cosmetics – particularly loving the transformative nature of make-up.

“Make-up has … power,” she told People Style. “You can transform yourself into another being, which I think is really amazing. I know women who feel most like themselves when they have a full face of make-up on and that makes them feel strong about themselves.

“We as women have every tool that we need in order to feel our strongest, best self. I don’t think that make-up has to hide you. I think it can accentuate what you already have.”

Nicole feels the same way about fashion. The former The Simple Life star has become known as something of a style icon in recent years, thanks to her boho chic way of dressing. And when it comes to her wardrobe, Nicole is all about choosing items depending on how she feels at that moment.

“My fashion choices are extremely emotional,” she explained. “I am somebody who likes a lot of colour around me. It elevates me. I’m very passionate about colour and I know that it has a direct effect on the energy that I have around me. And so when I’m putting something on, that definitely changes the way that I feel and the way that I approach the day.”

Further explaining her method of dressing, Nicole continued: “If I’m sick or I’m having my ‘monthly-not-feeling-too-great-about-myself’ woman moment, I’ll wear a bright colour to make me feel a little more alive.”
