Maleficent Covers Dhs700 million Budget in First Weekend
Angelina Jolie has obviously attracted a new set of younger fans as Maleficent, always expected to do well in the box office, surprised cinema pundits by raking in more than Dhs250 million during its first weekend on release in North America alone, and then taking the rest of the world by storm too.
The 38-year-old actress, who plays the title role of wicked fairy godmother Maleficent in this Disney re-interpretation of the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty , was joined at the Hollywood premiere on 28 May by her husband Brad Pitt and children Pax, Zahara, Knox, Shiloh and Maddox.
This movie is being hailed as a career revival for Angelina whose previous two releases, 2010’s The Tourist co-starring Johnny Depp, and Salt, underwhelmed critics and fans alike and had poor ticket sales. Maleficent, made on an approximately Dhs700 million budget, has managed to recoup most of its costs just days after its initial release.
