I’m not gonna lie, guys, I’m not the tallest person in the world so playing basketball has always been a bit of a challenge. Don’t get me wrong, I love the sport and I even have a small court set up in my back garden, but being under 6ft tall really makes playing it that much more difficult. So when I was told I’d get to meet US basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the first thing that raced through my head was what tips he might have to improve my game? For those of you who don’t know who Kareem is, he played for the Los Angeles Lakers, was a record six-time NBA Most Valuable Player, a record 19-time NBA All-Star, and was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. On top of that he’s starred onscreen alongside Johnny Depp, Will Smith and Bruce Lee, to name but a few.

Kareem was in the United Arab Emirates to raise awareness of diabetes and will be leading about 20,000 people on a walk around Yas Marina Circuit this weekend. But the Virgin team and I got to speak to him at the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre first, and he explained to us why a healthy and balanced lifestyle can help prevent the onset of diabetes. Now, while having a sound and fit way of life is obviously important, what I really wanted to know was how I can beat Ahlan! Group Editor Sarah in a one-on-one match! Thankfully, Kareem showed me the way! I learned his trademark technique, the “skyhook”, which is basically a very cool hook shot, so I can now challenge anyone and everyone to a game of basketball, confident that I’ll win!
