While most of us would be happy with a bunch of flowers or a box of fancy chocolates from our other half, A-listers tend to think bigger when it comes to showing their loved ones just how much they care. Ahlan! takes a look at the outrageous offerings and OTT romantic gestures of the stars and shows you how to recreate the magic here in the UAE this Valentine’s Day.

The other half: Victoria Beckham

The OTT treat: David apparently spent over Dhs3,675,000 on a Napa Valley vineyard for Victoria’s 34th birthday in 2008, presenting the gift to his wife with a bottle of vino emblazoned with her name. The Beckhams join fellow grape-buffs Gerard Depardieu and Sir Cliff Richard who each own several wineries.

How ‘wow’ was it? Sweet gesture, but we think Vic would have preferred another customised Hermés Birkin.

Did their love last? The Beckhams welcomed little Harper into the world last year and VB credited David as her inspiration when she collected the British Fashion Award for Best Designer Brand in November 2011.

Treat your partner to membership of The Capital Club Wine Society. A gold membership costs Dhs6,000, while Platinum is Dhs15,000. For a more purse-friendly alternative, try a night out at Oscar’s Vine Society, an award-winning bar with a traditional French feel, offering 40 varieties of grape by the glass and more than 100 by the bottle.

INFO: The Capital Club Wine Society,; Oscar’s Vine Society, Crowne Plaza, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, 04 331 1111.

The other half: Mariah Carey

The OTT treat: Nick, who married Mariah in April 2008, splashed out an alleged Dhs5.5 million on a five-bedroom ski chalet in Aspen, Colorado for his new wife. According to sources, Aspen is one of Mariah’s favourite holiday destinations.

How ‘wow’ was it? The singer isn’t short of homes, with properties in New York and LA, but ski chalets don’t come cheap!

Did their love last? Mariah gave birth to twins, Moroccan and Monroe, nicknamed ‘Roc and ‘Roe, in April 2011 and the couple launched a website dedicated to the twins,, in October of the same year.

Try a ski chalet at the Kempinski Mall of the Emirates, offering a bizarre Aspen-esque living experience with views over the Ski Dubai slope. A one-bed chalet costs from Dhs1,799, plus taxes - a bit less than Nick paid - but if you want to splash out, the Mzaar ski resort in Lebanon offers real ski action from late December to early March.

INFO: Kempinski, 04 341 0000;; Mzaar, Ski Leb, +961 7 010 3222,

The other half: Jay-Z

The OTT treat: Jay-Z has been quoted saying he ‘has everything’, so wife Beyoncé must have struggled to come up with a gift for her hubby’s 41st birthday in 2010. Luckily, Bey was able to snap up a Dhs7.3million Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. Jay’s new ride is one of only 300 on the planet.

How ‘wow’ was it? Most men would be pretty happy in this ride that can top 253mph!

Feeling flush? Al Habtoor Motors in Dubai is the official Bugatti partner in the UAE, but if you can’t afford a multi-million dirham car for your Jay-Z, then whisk him away to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and treat him with a Dhs325 premium pass that gives unlimited Fast Track lane access to all rides and attractions in the theme park. Speedy!

INFO: Al Habtoor Motors, Deira, Dubai, 04 294 4492; Ferrari World, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, 02 496 8001,

The other half: Katie Holmes

The OTT treat: If leaping on Oprah’s couch wasn’t enough to impress his wife-to-be, the Mission: Impossible actor dropped a cool Dhs73.4 million on a private Gulf Stream jet to present to the new Mrs Cruise in November 2006. The customised gift was reportedly Tom’s idea of a lavish offering that would ensure his new bride’s life was more practical and more fabulous.

How ‘wow’ was it? There are extreme celeb gifts and then there are customised private jets. It might not be the most environmentally-friendly wedding present, but it’s certainly one of the most starry.

Did their love last? Despite being dogged by ‘showmance’ allegations, the couple have been married for six years and still step out on the red carpet together looking almost as happy as Tom did that day on Oprah’s sofa.

With the award-winning Royal Jet Group, around Dhs50,000 will get you a VIP private jet flight from Dubai to Bahrain, a limo or helicopter to take you from your home to the steps of the aircraft, a personal chef, and in-flight entertainment, plus any extras you require, such as your partner’s fave flowers. If you’re not made of money, take a trip on a Seawings plane, where 40-minute flights leave from Jebel Ali Hotel throughout the day and take in Dubai’s landmarks. Flights cost Dhs1,325 per person.

The other half: Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo

The OTT treat: The ditzy blonde beauty treated lucky Tony to a Dhs370,000 speed boat for his 28th birthday in April 2009. The lavish, custom-built 25-foot Malibu Wakesetter was presented at a birthday party at the couple’s Dallas home, and according to friends, was Tony’s dream gift.

How ‘wow’ was it? A great guy gift!

Did their love last? No, but Jess is now engaged to former NFL athlete Eric Johnson, and announced her pregnancy late last year.

Thrill-seekers in Abu Dhabi and Dubai can rent speed boats from The Yellow Boats for Dhs125 per person, per 30 minutes. Alternatively you can join a tour for between Dhs80 and Dhs280 per person, depending on the route. If you’re looking to buy, visit the Dubai International Boat Show from 13 to 17 March where a huge variety of boats and mega-yachts will be on display and up for grabs.

INFO: The Yellow Boats, 800 8044, Dubai International Boat Show, tickets from Dhs60,

The other half: Brad Pitt

The OTT treat: Being married to the most beautiful woman on the planet might be enough for most men, but Ange proved she’s more than a pretty face at Brad’s 44th birthday in 2007. One of the highest-paid actresses in the world in 2011, Angelina presented Pitt with a custom-made motorcycle, engraved with the words ‘My sweetheart, The drunk’ a reference to an album by Brad’s favourite singer, Jeff Buckley.

How ‘wow’ was it? This gift might not fit most of our budgets, but Ahlan! thinks it’s more sweet than sensational, especially since Ange earned over Dhs110 million for Salt and The Tourist in 2010.

Did their love last? After their PDA at last month’s SAG Awards, we’d say they seem pretty solid.

At Harley-Davidson’s UAE branch you can customise a new bike any way you like, from parts to colours, starting from Dhs125,000. Or you can rent a Harley for between Dhs400 and Dhs700 per day.

The other half: Russell Brand

The OTT treat: For his 35th birthday in 2010, the I Kissed A Girl singer reportedly booked a Dhs735,000 ticket to send her then-fiancé into space on the maiden voyage of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic space flight. Russell revealed to George Lopez on the chat show Lopez Tonight that Katy’s fear of flying might prevent her joining him on the romantic trip for two.

How ‘wow’ was it? There’s not much that can beat sending your man into space, but thankfully tickets are refundable.

Did their love last? The fairytale lasted just 14 months of marriage. After spending Christmas 7,000 miles apart, Russell filed for divorce from Katy in January, citing “irreconcilable differences”.

Take a romantic camping trip out to the remote red sands of Liwa, with dunes up to 200m high, and make like you’re on Mars. Pick up a map, aim for Abu Dhabi and Hamim village, then pass the village petrol station and carry on until you see a track; drive along it until you see a spot you like, then set up camp. Star-gazing is awesome out here! If it’s thrills you’re seeking rather than star-gazing, head to The Dubai Mall’s SEGA Republic, a two-level, 76,000sq ft indoor theme park, and treat your man to a Platinum Power pass for Dhs220, covering all attractions and Dhs200-worth of credit for games.

INFO: Desert Rangers plan camping trips in the UAE, 04 340 2408, visit; SEGA Republic, The Dubai Mall, 04 448 8484,

The other half: Selena Gomez

The OTT treat: The pint-sized pop star hired the entire Staples Centre in Malibu for a private screening of Titanic in September 2011. Biebs apparently managed to wangle the 20,000 capacity stadium free of charge, after he sold out the venue completely on three occasions.

How ‘wow’ was it? He didn’t spend a penny, but you’d need Bieberesque star status to pull this one off.

Did their love last? Despite rumours Justin was baby-daddy to fan Mariah Yeater’s newborn tot, Selena is still the number one Belieber.

DIY in the UAE
Zabeel Saray hotel has a private screening room for hire that seats up to 29 people, complete with red velvet chairs, popcorn, catering and drinks attendants for a minimum spend of Dhs5,000, plus film permit, if required (which usually costs Dhs1,500 to Dhs7,000, but airing your own wedding video would be free). Alternatively, recreate the magic at home by hiring a huge inflatable screen for your garden from Air Screen starting at Dhs7,800, or embarrass your partner in the cheesiest way possible for just Dhs300 at Reel Cinemas, where you can have a personalised message put onto the big screen before a film!

INFO: Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, 04 366 5331,; Air Screen,; Reel Cinemas, Dubai Mall and Marina Mall, Dubai, 04 449 1988,

The other half: Wild child actress Patricia Arquette

The OTT treat: Nic fell head over heels with the beautiful actress at first sight in 1987, and announced the two would wed, even asking her to set him a task to prove his love. Arquette asked for writer JD Salinger’s autograph and a black orchid (a flower which doesn’t exist). The industrious actor purchased a letter signed by Salinger and painted an orchid black.

How ‘wow’ was it? The gesture here was more about thought and creativity than having “loadsamoney!”.

Did their love last? The couple dated in 1987 then split, and got back together and finally married in 1995, only to divorce in 2001.
