The Law of Multiplicity

Hoorah!, it’s finally September, the month when friends return with endless stories and tedious photographs from their long summer holidaying in St Tropez or yachting around the Greek islands. For me, the way to alleviate the ennui of all this catch-up talk is to pull together a little at-home reverie. After the fallow summer months, potential guests will be falling over themselves for a fun dinner invitation. So take this opportunity to return favours – invite those folk to whom you’ve long owed the return dinner invitation.

Safety in numbers, I say. Get them all together in one fell swoop and dine by design. Order-in a couple of large plates of fresh seafood from Markets and Platters, prepare a bounty of fresh salads and create a loose bar with all ingredients and implements laid out, and invite them to mix their own! This is one of my favourite tricks, and, honestly, the results are hilarious – stories to dine out on for months to come.

The Modern Hostess’ Guide to Fine China

The social wheel has once again creaked back into life – the perfect time to invest in some beautiful tableware. But what to buy? A quick swot of my cheat sheet on formal dinnerware and you’re good to go:
Don’t go cheap.Ceramic is ubiquitous and easy, but fine china adds high style and is surprisingly durable and dishwasher-friendly.

White is a classic option, but try a pattern that adds a little personality to your table. While traditionalists might advocate investing in eight to 12 place settings, I’d say six is sufficient, but most are packed in fives, including: a dinner plate, salad or dessert plate, bread plate, teacup and saucer. Bolster those with a serving platter, gravy boat, teapot and soup bowls.

And remember, matchy-matchy is so 2013 – mix it up!
