Get ready to run at Yas Marina this Saturday!
Get on your marks for Zayed Marathon!

This Saturday, Yas Marina Circuit will be deluged by fun-runners this weekend for the capital’s annual Zayed Marathon.

Dubbed “the day the UAE runs”, the Zayed Marathon honours the country’s founding president, His Highness Sheikh Zayed, an avid supporter of kidney charities, and is held under the patronage of Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.

Lt Gen Mohammed Al Kaabi, of the Armed Forces Officers Club, said: “The Day The UAE Runs is almost upon us, and we are delighted to be further honouring the memory of His Highness Sheikh Zayed.

“We would urge everyone to participate and help us to raise money for the Health Kidney Foundation. With a new children’s course and even more entertainment on offer than ever before, this year will be a great day out for all the family to enjoy.”

There’s Dhs10,000 up for grabs in the men’s and women’s 5k and 10k runs, with Dhs7,000 and Dhs5,000 prizes for second and third place respectively. The 5k and 10k runs are open to everyone aged 15 and up, and there’s a 5k hand cycle race for wheelchair users. For the first time in its history, the event’s been opened up to kids, who can enter free of charge, with 1k runs on offer for eight- to 11-year-olds and a 3k route for those aged 12 to 15.

Each competitor gets a timing chip, souvenir shirt, medal and race number, and the Dhs100 registration fee will be used to support patients with kidney conditions. There’s also more off-track fun on offer than ever, including acrobats, circus performers, musicians, dancers, henna art, a bungee run and a climbing wall. Kids will be catered for with their own bouncy castle and art and craft zone, while entertainers will appear at four key points along the track to help spur runners on.

A social media campaign will run alongside this year’s event, and competitors are encouraged to post their best preparation stories on Instagram using the hashtag #ZayedMarathon. Everyone who posts will be in with a chance of winning return flights and accommodation to the Healthy Kidney 10k in New York City on 30 May this year.

Yas Marina Circuit’s CEO, Al Tareq Al Ameri, said: It is an honour to host this great event and be part of the Zayed Marathon for The Day The UAE Runs.

“It is also fitting that it should be taking place at Yas Marina Circuit, an iconic UAE community venue.”
