Dinner Review: The Penthouse, Five Palm Jumeirah Dubai
The Penthouse, we are told before arriving at the chic new Palm Jumeirah hotspot, is an adults-only rooftop day club and evening lounge. So naturally, we’re intrigued as we step into the sleek white and gold alfresco bar. With laid-back house music playing, the atmosphere is upbeat enough to feel like a night out, but you’re not competing with a beat to have a conversation. We love it from the moment we walk in.
Considering the fact that Dubai is currently enjoying a bit of a cold snap, we wrapped up warm ahead of arriving, but we needn’t have. As we sit down, our helpful waiter brings over two large, cosy blankets and moves a heater above our heads. Sure, we’re sat on a windy rooftop at the end of January, but we are far from chilly.
Aside from the temperature, the first thing that makes an impact is, of course, the view. Almost all of the tables are set up to make the most of the panoramic perspective of Dubai Marina and Bluewaters Island, both of which are glittering prettily after dark.
After sipping on a welcome drink, our attention is focussed fully on the food menu. Made up of a vast selection of delicious bites, it is almost impossible to choose just a couple of dishes. We opt for the sushi selection, but there are also various Arabic dishes available.
Our meal begins with fried baby squid and soft shell tempura crab. Neither feels greasy or over-fried. They are ideal nibbles to kick off with over a long, chilled drink.
It isn’t long before our edamame beans arrive along with spicy tuna rolls – our faves – and Wagyu maki. Limiting this selection to just two dishes takes a lot of restraint, it’s all we can do not to order the entire sushi selection, including a few of our other favourites, like sea bass sashimi, California maki and ebu tempura maki. However, what we do order is prepared to perfection. The bite-sized rolls are packed full of flavour and the spicy tuna has the exact kick we are hoping for.
It’s then time to try the mains. We’ve over-indulged a little with the starters, so we decide to share one between the two of us, and put The Penthouse, arguably, to the most important Dubai test – to check how its black cod measures up to others around town. We’re not disappointed. Super tender and packed full of miso flavour, we would 100 percent order it again.
If seafood isn’t your thing, don’t worry, The Penthouse certainly caters for you too. It offers up a grilled Wagyu steak in the large-plate section, as well as a selection of flatbreads, including a truffle one and a quattro formaggi option, as well as all of your favourite mezze offerings.
Now, no matter how full we’re feeling, we can’t leave without trying a dessert. We ask our waiter what he recommends, and it seems that the giant Eton strawberry mess is the stand-out decision. An enormous take on the British classic, it’s one that you have to share, but packed full of cream, meringue and strawberries, you will be more than happy to do so.
As we finish our meal, we sit back, relax and enjoy The Penthouse atmosphere well into the night. The perfect way to digest a delicious meal in a stunning setting.
