One minute rundown: Mic-hogger Avril, wowed her Napanee townsfolk with her huge voice from an early age. Growing up in Ontario, Canada she taught herself to play the guitar and toured the local music scene until manager Cliff Fabri discovered her singing in a book shop.

In 1999 she won a contest to sing with Shania Twain and never looked back. She quickly signed with Arista Records and at just 16 years old, Lavigne moved to New York to record her first album – a set of country songs. Yeah right! Quite wisely, she legged it to LA to concentrate on rock. In 2003, her album Let Go shot her to fame, and the hits Sk8er Boi and Complicated earned her a fanbase of preteens all over the world, as well as five Grammy nominations. In 2004, her second album, Under My Skin did just as well and she announced her relationship with Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley. In 2006, Avril went through a bit of an image change – modeling for Ford agency and Harpers and all that. We didn’t like her as much in fancy clothes, so it’s good that the phase didn’t really last long – except for her wedding day of course. Well, she can be excused for wearing Vera Wang for that. She and Deryck were married in California in July 2006, after Avril provided the voice of an opossum in Over the Hedge and made a cameo in Fast Food Nation - reported to be her favourite book.

She’s recently been accused of plagiarism by an ancient new wave band who reckon her song Girlfriend is a rip off of something they wrote in the 70s. Whatever lads, we reckon you should get back to your pipes and slippers!
