Adopted in March 2002 aged seven months, Maddox is the rumoured reason behind Billy Bob Thornton ending his marriage to Angelina – he said he wasn’t ready to become a father – and for three years, before Ange met Brad and they jointly adopted Zahara, it was just mum and son against the world.
He never puts down roots
Brad and Ange caused controversy by pulling six-year-old Maddox out of his New York school – the Lycee Francais – last week, because Brad’s filming commitments in the city had ended. Having upped sticks to LA, where Angelina is now filming, experts have hit out at the pair for failing to provide a “stable family unit.”
“Maddox is an adopted child, so he already has a sense of abandonment,” said Manhattan psychotherapist Puia Hall. “Kids that are constantly on the move… very often they don’t want to open up to people. They feel loss, and there is a problem with attachment.”
Lived in five countries in 16 months
Over the last 16 months, the Jolie-Pitt clan have lived in New Orleans, Paris, Namibia, Prague, India, New York and now Los Angeles, and the children are rarely pictured with other kids.
“With the moves, the kids just don’t invest in relationships, because they’re going to lose them anyway,” insists Hall. “They think, ‘Why bother? I’m not gonna stick around. We’re gonna pick up and go, and the loss of friends is painful.’”
The pressure of being ‘the one’
It’s clear that Maddox remains the apple of Ange’s eye, as her first child and the boy she sacrificed her second husband for.
“My son has completely changed my life,” she gushed. “He’s brought me peace and chaos, happiness and joy.” Adding, “He’s absolutely the centre of my life.”
The paparazzi are ‘normal’
“I just think how strange it is for my kids,” said Brad recently. “Mad, Z, Pax – they really believe that every time you go outside there is a herd of people with cameras snapping flashes in your face, who are going to block your way when you’re trying to get somewhere. That is their vision of the world outside… It’s an everyday thing for them.”
