Her gritty role as Brandon Teena won the Best Actress Oscar in 1999, but playing the role saw Hilary cut off her hair, learn to deepen her voice and live so convincingly as a boy for over a month before filming began that her neighbours thought her brother had come to stay.
“It was very important to me to actually pass as a boy, to live as a boy,” she revealed. Adding, “It took about four weeks for me to detox from masculinity. I felt like I had lost every ounce of femininity and didn’t know if I’d ever get it back.”
