BRUNCH REVIEW: Amwaj Rotana

Fridays are big at Amwaj Rotana, especially since the hotel has revamped its brunch. If you haven’t visited the hotel at JBR before, #AllOutBrunch is the perfect place to start, as it combines all three of the hotel’s major food outlets – Rosso, Benihana and JB’s Gastropub.

We arrive and take our seats outside on the expansive terrace. At brunch, the whole outdoor area is taken over as the restaurants become a walk-around culinary journey, with more than 10 live cooking stations across Italian eatery Rosso, Japanese restaurant Benihana and a food truck from JB’s. Stations are situated both inside and out and range from everything from mountains of fresh seafood, to proper British fish and chips (complete with Sarson’s vinegar), to sushi, pizza and roast dinners. There are more than 100 dishes on offer, so even the fussiest of eaters can’t fail to find something they love here.

After a mosey around the stations (it takes a good 10 minutes to do a full recce) our first stop is JB’s food truck, where they’re serving up the pub’s favourites including tacos, hot dogs and some deliciously tender beef ribs. Another highlight is the made-to-order pizzas from Rosso, which come piping hot and loaded with tasty toppings.

Our favourite, however, is the feast available from American-Japanese food chain Benihana. There’s a huge selection of sushi, all of which is super-fresh and delicious, plus salads and dim sum. Don’t miss a trip into the kitchen, where you’ll get a warm welcome from the chefs, plus stir-fry (teriyaki beef, chilli prawns, etc.) and rice. Famous for its live cooking teppanyaki tables, you can also take your turn at this, while the chef whips up your choice of veg and meat in front of you.

If you can muster the energy for dessert there’s ice creams, cakes and a large fruit counter. It’s not a party brunch, but the vibe is upbeat and fun (and surprisingly family-friendly – there’s a even a separate kids’ zone with a doughnut wall). Head to this one for a casual and fun afternoon with some top- notch food.
