Circus Musicians by Fernando Botero will go on display at DIFC's Opera Gallery Dubai

Opera Gallery Dubai is set to unveil a retrospective dedicated to some of the best-known artists of the 20th century.

Icons of Art will feature works by Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger and Henri Matisse, among others – creative visionaries who changed the way art is perceived worldwide.

Depicting major developments in recent art history, the carefully curated selection of nearly 70 works will include celebrated works by Andy Warhol, Fernando Botero and Alexander Calder, tracing the evolution of movements from impressionism, post-impressionism and fauvism to expressionism cubism and futurism.

Famed impressionist Renoir’s oil on canvas Deux Filles dans un Pré (Deux Femmes dans L’Herbe, 1910), which was held in various private collections, will act as the focal point for the show. The painting illustrates original impressionist style with its analysis of the effects of colour and light in real time with Renoir’s use of plump rosy-cheeked women to depict femininity, health and happiness.

The gallery’s general manager, Sylvain P Gaillard, said: “With the impending arrival of prestigious art institutions such as the Louvre and the Guggenheim to the region, as well as a burgeoning local art scene, now is the time to showcase the acclaimed artists who have forever shaped and defined modern art.

“We are thrilled to present Icons of Art at Opera Gallery Dubai this January. Showcasing an exhibition of this calibre demonstrates the gallery’s ongoing commitment to offer the region a diverse selection of global contemporary art.”

Additional artworks in the exhibition include Picasso’s 1958 work Tête de Faune, Marc Chagall’s Nature Morte (1975) and Cattails and Yellow Moon, produced by abstract painter and sculptor Alexander Calder in 1968.
