Salalah
The Middle East’s tropical haven is only a short hop away...
SalalahSandy beaches, rugged mountains, a tropical climate and medieval ruins – it sounds like something from an Indiana Jones movie, but a luxe holiday is closer than you think – in Oman’s second largest town, Salalah.
The warm temperatures and monsoon season of Salalah attracts visitors seeking a green haven among its drier neighbours. Here, the wildlife is abundant, with over 480 species of birds and land mammals, such as the oryx and Arabian leopard. And the marine life includes sea turtles and dolphins, all of which can be seen on organised tours.
To add an authentic flavour to your trip, head to one of the souqs. Al Hafah souq, set amid coconut groves, sells Omani silver, textiles and frankincense, which grows around the mountain wadis. You can also pick up Omani perfumes, such as Bukhour.
Come sundown, enjoy balmy evenings strolling on the beach, or sipping cocktails at the Hilton Salalah.
While you're there...
Wild wadi
No Salalah trip is complete without a visit to Wadi Darbat Nature Reserve, on the east coast. Take the scenic coastal road to this oasis, filled with waterfalls, cascades and lots of greenery. Watch out for the many birds that call it home, and visit the world’s largest sinkhole, Tawi Attir.
Beach-side dining
The Palm Grove restaurant at the Hilton Salalah Resort, is said to be the city’s most romantic spot for dinner. Dine on the beach at the edge of the Indian Ocean and feast on an extensive international menu. It’s very popular, so make sure you book ahead of your trip!
Explore the deep
If you’re an experienced scuba diver, then you’ll want to get the most out of Salalah’s diverse marine life. Less confident folk, who still want to experience this underwater world, can enjoy snorkelling among the many untouched reefs. For more info on dive trips, contact the Sub Aqua Dive Centre, at the Hilton Salalah.
