The secrets of Segreto
Beat the festive stresses and escape to Italy, in the shadow of Al Qasr...
The secrets of SegretoIf somebody told me that Segreto translated to seamless in Italian then I'd probably believe them. In fact, I'd kick myself for not thinking this as soon as I was efficiently escorted to my table, introduced to the carefully chosen menu and offered a champagne cocktail.
Discovering Segreto itself, is like coming across the entrance to the Labyrinth. The huge wooden doorway introduces you to a scene almost reminiscent of an Escher painting. Once you step through this giant timber entrance you'll find you're welcomed warmly and guided through a strange maze of twists and turns. An effortlessly sophisticated restaurant is set peacefully below, amid a mass of windtowers, waterways and soft outdoor lighting.
It's a crime to not dine alfresco when surrounded by the soaring windtowers of the Malakiya Villas. You'll find yourself part of such a calming ambiance, that Dubai's skyscraper lined highways seem worlds away. Views of the waterways will complement your sighs of relief and satisfaction in finally being able to get away from it all.
Start your meal with a champagne cocktail; the highly trained staff are able to recommend some great concoctions and can list the ingredients as if they had literally just created them personally. The segreto signature cocktail is a mix of citrus flavours and has one incredible kick, while the Rossini is sweeter and perfect for lovers of raspberries and strawberries, oh and of course champagne.
The menu is small but obviously carefully hand picked, with the first page dedicated wholly to the chefs recommendations. From these the duck foie gras is an acquired yet very intriguing option, beautifully presented and very tasty. The beef carpaccio is a fantastic starter, the meat almost melts in your mouth and is just the perfect size to leave you wanting more. For the main course, the Braised Beef in Barolo Red Wine sauce is a great choice; the accompanying portion of gnocchi may be a little on the small side but the Barolo sauce is beautiful and complements the beef perfectly. The Chilean Seabass is ever so slightly dry but the overall taste is fantastic and the white bean and shallots are a great addition to the meal. For dessert, lovers of heavy puddings should go for the tiramisu while the raspberry mille feuille is a light and guaranteed to satisfy any sweet tooth.
Finish your meal with a glass of Tuscany Red. Well, that's what the waiter suggested and who will argue with that? The wine recommendations are incredible and touches like this really make Segreto what it is; a very personal, relaxing, and warming little place.
