JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT and her fiance ROSS McCALL have split, according to US reports.

Sources tell People magazine the couple broke up over Christmas and have ended their engagement.

An insider says, "They're both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them."

Love Hewitt, 29, got engaged to the Scottish actor, 32, in November 2007 after they dated for two years.

The first signs their romance was in trouble came in September when the actress was snapped sobbing as McCall packed luggage into the back of a vehicle outside her home.
