It had to happen eventually, right? Desert Heat, the first Emirati Hip Hop group, are about to shoot their debut music video for the song, ‘Keep it desert', and quite excitingly, it's going to be released on local and "international" music channels!
Desert Heat is the first Emirati group to officially launch into the Hip Hop music scene - have you checked out their stuff yet? Their music merges western drums with Middle Eastern instrumentation and lyrics, and most importantly, it contains no profanity or explicit lyrics - so mum's won't mind you blasting it round your bedrooms.
The band have established themselves by performing at Sean Paul's concert, 2pac's tribute concert in Dubai and a special short film for Discovery Channel worldwide. Most recently, on Nov 15th, Dubai got a taste of real Arabian hip hop during Desert Heat's latest performance at the MTV press Show, alongside international rap & R&B artists, Akon, Ludacris and Karl Wolf. Talk about going up in the world...
This weekend, the brothers Illmiyah (Salim Dahman, 26) & Arableak (Abdallah Dahman, 21) set off to a remote desert location in rural Ras Al Khaimah to record their music video - which was self-financed, doncha know. It's the first single of the album, ‘When the desert Speaks', and it's set to be released by the end of this year.
Desert Heat's main focus for the video was to shed some positive light on Arabs and Muslims worldwide, as well as representing their origin, all while rapping on set with their off-white kandoras, ghatras (Emirati traditional wear).and leather sandals. "We have many surprises in the video for the viewers; people will just have to wait and see... its going to be big", says Abdallah, Desert Heat artist.
Word is that major national and multinational corporations have expressed interest in being involved and sponsoring the group's next videos:
"We are very keen on working with companies who show genuine interest in our music and message, all in the name of bringing up true local talent. Hip-Hop is a movement, and by adding our Arabian knowledge and experience, we're about to take it to a whole other level", says Salim Dahman, Desert Heat artist and producer.
We can't wait - good luck guys!
