Head into the Desert

One of Dubai’s biggest playgrounds for the adventure-loving folk is the area surrounding the city. Gently rolling dunes with sun-baked golden sand offer the perfect place for a huge range of activities, from dune-bashing in a four wheel drive to sandboarding, go-karting, horseriding and sunset camel rides. Desert safaris are a popular pastime, where you’ll be whisked away in a luxury 4x4 car for a whirlwind dune-bashing session that’s guaranteed to give you an adrenaline rush (not recommended for those who get motion sickness!), then, depending upon the safari you’ve chosen (see our boxout), you’ll be taken off on a number of different activities, though nearly all of them will take you to a traditional, Bedouin-style camp, where you can experience Arabic hospitality with shisha.

Daily tours are available with Arabian Adventures and can be booked by calling 04 303 4888. For overnight desert stays (with a minimum of six people) call 04 283 0889 and if you’re interested in Desert Driving Courses with the Desert Rangers, call 04 422 0044. They run from September to May, with a maximum of two people per car (aged 21 or over) and cost Dhs1,500 (inclusive of an instructor and Land Rover).

Sky diving or scuba diving? Horse riding or desert driving? Sailing or skiing? It’s up to you what you try out this weekend...

 • 4xfun

Do you find being in a big four-wheel drive a bit too distant from the sand action? Quad-biking offers just as much fun and gets you a lot closer to the sand! You’ll be able to take things at your own pace (the only limit in the desert is how fast your quad will go!), and kick up as much sand as you want.

Arabian Desert Tours offer quad-biking experiences every day at Dhs350 per person (for an hour). The price includes pick-up and drop-off. Bookings must be made at least one day in advance.
 • Hit the (sand) slopes

If you don’t fancy getting familiar with the slopes on wheels, then why not try out sand-skiing, the latest craze to sweep Dubai? Big Red, a sand dune on the way to Hatta, is one of the most popular spots for sand skiing, where you’ll mount a standard snowboard and slip and slide your way down sand to the bottom. Even if you’ve never been snowboarding before, it’s a sport that’s pretty quick to pick up – and if you do fall off, it’s nice and soft – but just remember to keep your mouth closed at all times!

Book your sand-skiing through Knight Tours. Tel: 04 268 6555 or 04 343 7725.
 • Take a wadi bashing

Thrill-seekers around the world know all about Dubai’s infamous wadi-bashing trips. For the uninitiated, a wadi is a dry river bed, so it’s really not as violent as it sounds! It’s a must-do activity for anyone in the UAE, with the rocky river-beds and rugged terrain offering bone-shaking, breathtaking (literally, at times!) experiences which are guaranteed to be different every time. It can be a difficult drive so it’s recommended that you take an expert with you.

The Hatta Pool Safari, offered by Desert Rangers, is a full day of wadi bashing, with lunch in a mountain resort. Prices are Dhs325 for adults, Dhs230 for children (a minimum of four people are required). For bookings, call 04 422 0044.
 • Be’spoke’ fun

An increasingly popular sport in Dubai, cycling has hit the ground with all wheels spinning. In fact, it’s gained so much momentum that the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority are working on a bicycle network throughout the city so that cyclists can be safe wherever they pedal. If you’re serious about cycling, then you’ll want to check in with the Dubai Roadsters, a social group who enjoy recreational cycling in the city, with weekly club rides, training rides, tours through the deserts and mountains, plus the occasional race and overseas cycling tours.

The Dubai Roadsters can be contacted by calling 04 339 4453.
 • Hit the high sea

With all that gorgeous turquoise-hued water out there, how can you not want to play on it? Soak up the sun on a sailing excursion as you escape from the hustle and bustle of the city for a peaceful day among the waves. There’s plenty of wildlife to keep an eye out for, including dolphins, whales, sharks, shy dugongs and turtles, plus tropical fish, jellyfish and corals.

Private boat charters can be booked from Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, on 04 295 6000. Or why not learn to sail at the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club, with fees starting at Dhs200 per person for a two hour group course. For more details, call 04 394 1596.
 • Sea, surf and soar

A plethora of kites create a rainbow of colour above the beach at Jumeirah and Umm Suqueim most weekends, where kitesurfers hit the waves en masse. This unique watersport involves riding on a kiteboard (similar to a wakeboard) and using the power of the wind to pull you across the waves and through the air for a truly exhilarating experience. While the Dubai Municipality has made it a requirement for all kitesurfers (even visitors) to have a licence, it is easy to get one from the Dubai Kite Club, who also offer lessons.

Temporary (one month) and full (12 month) memberships can be obtained from the Dubai Kite Club. For more details, visit www.dubaikiteclub.com.
 • Dive into the depths

The UAE’s waters aren’t just pretty from above – in fact, there’s a whole world to be explored down below, thanks to both the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean being on our doorstep. Whether you want advanced diving down to wrecks or a bit of light snorkelling, you’ll find it all in the waters around the UAE, and excursions are organised by local diving clubs on a regular basis from Dubai, with most heading to Fujairah and Oman most weekends.

The Pavilion Dive Centre at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel offers diving courses and excursions for all levels, including PADI certification and advanced diving courses. Excursion prices start from Dhs350 per person. For further information, call 04 406 8828.
 • Fish for your dinner

After a day exploring the oceans, what better way to end the day then by catching your own dinner as well? Our waters may not be the best known worldwide, but the quality of salt-water and deep sea fishing off the coast of the UAE is high enough to draw those in the know from around the world. You’ll find grouper, hammour, longtail tuna, snapper and more all year through. All you need now is the chips!

Seven Seas Marine offer daily fishing charters. For details and bookings, call 050 770 4727.
 • Make a splash

Be prepared to get wet and wild! Dubai boasts some of the best aquatic adventure parks in the world, thanks to the Wild Wadi and the new Aquaventure. The infamous Wild Wadi Water Park is home to the tallest and fastest freefall waterslide outside of North America –the Jumeirah Sceirah – and if the surf isn’t good enough on the beaches, there’s always the Wipeout, Ripetide and the FlowRider to practice on before heading to Breakers Bay which is one of the largest wave pools in the Middle East.

The new Aquaventure is the most exciting newcomer for water babies. Taking up 17 beachfront acres at the Atlantis, The Palm, the water park boasts the Ziggurat, a 30 metre-tall pyramid that features seven big-thrills rides, including the Leap of Faith (a 27.5 metre, near-vertical drop) and Shark Attack, which will spin you through the pyramid and into a shark-filled lagoon… definitely not somewhere for the faint-hearted!

Wild Wadi Water Park is open seven days a week. Adults cost Dhs195, and Dhs165 for children. For more information, call 04 348 4444. Aquaventure is open daily from 11am-7pm. Adult day entry costs Dhs220 (guests at Atlantis, The Palm are free of charge). For more information, call 04 426 1000. For waterbabies out of Dubai, head to Dreamland Aqua Park in Umm Al Quwain. Visit www.dreamlanduae.com for more details.
 • Surf’s up!

With pretty much perfect weather all year round, Dubai is a surfer’s paradise. Various spots along the coast offer good-sized swells, though it’s recommended that you ask the advice of someone in the know before you hit the waves, as some beach areas are dangerous. Surfers of Dubai and Surf Dubai are groups of knowledgeable surfers, and offer plenty of information on their websites to new surfers in the area. Want to surf but don’t know how? Then sign up for lessons!

Surf Dubai offers lessons seven days a week, from 9am-4pm. A pack of three lessons for adults costs Dhs500, and includes a board. For more information, call 050 504 3020 or visit www.surfersofdubai.com.
 • Tee off

Greens are surprisingly common in the desert, where everyone seems to be going golf-mad, and it’s not just the local residents who are in the mood for a bit of a swing, but international sporting stars who have offered not only their expertise but their names to the designing of the playing grounds, including the first course designed by Tiger Woods.

Mild weather from September to May makes for perfect playing conditions, with the manicured lawns offering a superb playing fields for golfers.

One of the best ways to see Dubai is from the air. Skydive Dubai offers a skydiving school, where you can do an accelerated freefall jump (AFF) intensive course, which will have you certified to jump by yourself after no more than eight jumps. Your first jump will be from 12,000 feet with two instructors in freefall alongside. Not quite brave enough to take the plunge by yourself? • Play a chukka

If there’s an equestrian sport more glamorous than polo, we’ve yet to find it. If it’s good enough for royalty then we reckon it’s good enough for us, and luckily in Dubai there’s plenty of ways for you to get involved with jodhpur-clad folks. To learn how to play the world’s fastest team game (those polo ponies can get up to 56km an hour, while chasing the ball down the green), your best bet is to sign up with a Polo Academy, where you’ll be able to pick up the game in next to no time. For those of you who’d rather get your chukka action from the sidelines, you won’t be disappointed. Get your gladrags on and head to one of Dubai’s polo grounds at the Arabian Ranches or Desert Palm, where you’ll catch all the fun through a haze of champagne bubbles.

Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club offers The Dubai Polo Academy with prices starting at Dhs495 for a one hour group lesson. For details, call 04 361 8111 or visit www.dubaipoloacademy.com
 • Horsing around

Dubai and horses seem to go perfectly hand in hand; from the traditional image of a Bedouin and his prized Arabian stallion to pretty polo ponies and the glitz and glamour of the world’s richest horse race, equestrian pursuits are definitely popular. Whether you want to master horsemanship to a professional level or just want to learn enough to be able to make your mount go left when you ask it to, there are plenty of riding schools willing to teach you. We recommend learning just enough so that you can go out on one of the desert hacks, where you can catch the sun rise or set over the gently rolling dunes. It’s an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

For lessons or desert hacks, contact Al Awadi Stables on 050 965 6870, or Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club on 04 361 8111.
