Explore Abu Dhabi’s Religious Gem

The new Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the third biggest mosque in the world, and is impressive from the get-go. With its stunning Italian marble façade covering over 22,000 square metres, four 107 metre-tall minarets and 82 domes (one being the largest mosque dome in the world), the Sheikh Zayed Mosque dominates the Abu Dhabi skyline. Decorated with thousands of rare and semi-precious stones and what is thought to be the world’s largest Persian carpet (with an impressive span of 6,000 square metres), the mosque can accommodate up to 9,000 men at prayer and is estimated to have cost Dhs2 billion.

A fitting tribute to the mosque’s namesake Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the UAE, who is buried there.

 • The Jumeirah Mosque

Whether you’ve been in the Middle East for five minutes or five years, there are likely to be things that you may not know about the local religion – Islam. The Jumeirah Mosque on Jumeirah Beach Road, with its ornate, creamy white domes and minarets, is the ideal place to get an insight into Islam, as it is the only mosque in Dubai that is open to non-Muslims.

Tours are organised with an aim to promote better understanding between the different cultures in the UAE, and during the 75-minute tour, you’ll learn about the religion and the meaning behind its practises, while taking in the elaborate decoration and stunning Islamic architecture.

Jumeirah Mosque tours are available every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 10am, at a charge of Dhs10 per person. Booking in advance is advised and appropriate clothing should be worn. Call 04 353 6666 for bookings..
 • Camel Racing

The Dubai World Cup may take centre stage when it comes to the racing scene – but something that features on every list of tourist must-dos is watching the dust fly up as a filed of fired up camels stampede to victory.

Held during the winter, the racing season culminates in the annual race festival at Al Wathba. And with the city skyline in the distance, who needs heels and a hat to enjoy racing in the desert?

Races are held at Al Wathba race course every Thursday and Friday from October to April.
 • Experience Royal Living

After careful restoration, the house of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, who ruled Dubai from 1912 to 1958 and was grandfather of the emirate’s current ruler, is open to give the public an insight into late 19th century Dubai living.

One of the oldest buildings in the city, dating back to 1896, the house in Bur Dubai displays a collection of rare and historic photographs, coins, stamps and documents, which record Dubai’s history. In addition, the house was built using traditional methods, and the wind towers are great examples of the ancient air conditioning used by original settlers.

Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House is open from Saturday to Thursday, 7.30am-9.30pm. Admission is Dhs2.
 • Explore Traditions

Examine the traditions of the past at the Diving Village and Heritage Centre in Bur Dubai, where guided tours will take you through the crafts and artefacts of the emirate’s history. Discover pearl diving and maritime implements, board the life-size replica of a traditional dhow, and find out how divers would harvest oysters from the bottom of the sea without modern equipment.

Old-time crafts such as pottery and weaving are practised live, and on weekends, evenings and during Ramadan, cultural displays of singing and dancing, local food and goodies are available to take you right back in time.

The Diving Village and Heritage Centre is open from Saturday to Thursday, 8am-10pm, and Friday from 8am-11am and 4pm-10pm. For further information, call 04 393 7151 or visit www.dubaitourism.ae.
 • Cruise the Creek

Stretch limos and luxury liners aside, a ride down the Creek aboard an abra (water taxi), as the day’s final rays reflect off the ever-increasing glass jungle, is one way to either impress a city slicker guest or simply blow away the cobwebs and get back in touch with where your hometown came from.

If you’re happy to share with others (and want to escape the traffic), a dirham gets you a quick trip across from Bur Dubai to Deira, but it’s well worth spending that little bit extra (and a few minutes of friendly negotiation) to get the abra to yourself for the complete Creek experience.

It may not be as romantic as a gondola ride down the Grand Canal, but these colourful rides offer a trip along the waterway where Dubai began. And while pearl divers are a thing of the past and there is now the floating bridge cutting your journey short, you’ll pass dhows that still ply the trade routes of yesteryear and get a front row seat as the city skyline lights up… a perfect picture of then and now.

There are abra stations along the Creek in Bur Dubai and Deira. Prices start at Dhs1 or negotiate for a private boat ride.
 • Get your Bling On

In Deira’s Gold Souq, all that glitters literally is gold! With more than 300 jewellers’ displaying a vast array of goodies, you’ll be able to pick up anything you want, whether it be a necklace, bracelet, earrings or ring.

Keep your wallet handy as there are loads of unique jewellery pieces, set with precious and semi-precious stones and in an array of different golds… including green, pink and purple! And if you’re looking for something completely unique, there are plenty of skilled craftsmen on hand to make the necklace of your dreams or make alterations to existing pieces.

Take your time in the souq as there is so much to see and bargains to be found. Haggling is traditional and expected, so don’t be embarrassed to get those prices down and walk away with a timeless keepsake.

Dubai Gold Souq is open from 9am-1pm and 4pm-10pm (4pm-10pm on Fridays).
 • Add Some Spice

Dubai’s largest and oldest souq is the Spice Souq in Deira, and its narrow, heavily-scented lanes are definitely worth a visit if you’re looking to pick up some fresh and aromatic spices.

All spices here are sold by weight and arranged into a colourful patchwork display, like something out of a bygone era. You’ll be able to find almost anything used in Middle Eastern and Asian cooking, from dried black lemons to whole cinnamon stick bundles and spice mixes arranged in colourful striped pyramids, alongside fragrances like frankincense and shisha tobacco.

Dubai Spice Souq is open from 9am-1pm and 4pm-10pm (4pm-10pm on Fridays).
 • Get Tailor-made

Forget about breaking the bank on the latest designer labels, head to Mina Bazaar in Bur Dubai, and get that designer dress at a fraction of the price, and in the size and colour you want!

Known as the holy grail of tailoring in Dubai, start your tour by browsing the fabric stores, where a rainbow of colours will keep you occupied for hours. Once you’ve chosen what you want, take the fabric to one of the many tailors nearby, along with a picture of the design you want and you’ll soon have a custom-made outfit for next to nothing.

Now that’s designer shopping!
 • Discover The Secret

That is the XVA Gallery. Culture, art, new and old – they all merge together to create this unique (and highly desirable!) destination hidden away in a 100-year-old, traditional Dubai house in the heart of Bastakiya. Here you can while away the hours admiring the latest art exhibitions in the extensive display areas, kick back in the popular cafe to enjoy the delicious vegetarian cuisine or stay in one of the XVA Art Hotel’s six designer-decorated rooms. A true social point, the XVA Gallery is not to be missed.

XVA Gallery is located in Bastakiya, Bur Dubai. It is open on Saturday to Thursday from 9am-7pm, and on Friday from 10am-5pm. For more information, call 04 353 5383.
 • Back to Bastakiya-sics

The Bastakiya area is a unique part of Dubai, with its ornate Islamic architecture, narrow lanes and wind towers located along the banks of the Dubai Creek. The name derives from the Bastak region of Iran, which is where most of the Persian merchants who established this bustling area in the 19th century originally hailed from.

Renovations and preservation have kept the Old Town as alive as it was then, and there are plenty of things to do and see, including the museum, an art gallery, cultural centre and restaurants.
 • The Blue Souk in Sharjah

Only ten minutes up the road from the Dubai Creek, the Blue Souq in Sharjah (some refer to it as the Gold Souq due to the amount of gold merchants), is the emirate’s most famous landmark and a must-visit for tourists and residents alike.

The intricately designed building is decorated with thousands of hand-crafted blue tiles (hence the name) and is one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the region. It is also home to over 600 stores and is a treasure trove for Emirati, Omani and Yemani antique jewellery, rugs and trinkets. With so many bargains on offer, it is worth heading there in the evening (only ‘tourists’ go during the day) to ensure you get the best deals… but only after a bit of haggling, of course!

Open from 9am-1pm and 4pm-11pm from Saturday and Thursday (open 4pm-11pm on Friday).
