Star Style reveals how to stay sun-savvy through summer

Thinking of hitting the sun lounger for a turbo tan top-up? Stop! With temperatures rising, laying in the sun for even an hour can be damaging. Whilst the sun helps our bodies create vitamin D, vital for healthy living, too much can have ravaging effects inside and out, as sun-shy stars like DITA VON TEESE know only too well. Aside from its skin cancer- causing UV rays, 90 per cent of premature ageing is down to sun exposure. So play it safe and book in for a spray tan instead.

Whilst there are obvious steps you can take to protect your skin, like using products containing high factor broad spectrum protection and applying antioxidant body lotions, your diet can also help. Loading up on lycopene-rich tomatoes helps minimise the harmful effects of UV rays. Munching on red grapes, cherries and betacarotene-rich foods like carrots and apricots fights skin-damaging free radicals, as well as preserves skin collagen. Leafy green veg and oily fish reduce redness and inflammation caused by UV exposure, and taking a daily supplement of vitamin C, B6 and copper can also help your skin prepare itself for sun exposure.
