5 Things to do in the UAE This Week
Here's 5 things to do between now and the next Ahlan!
MON 8 FEB
CELEBRATE THE YEAR OF THE MONKEY!
Monday 8 February marks Chinese New Year – the year of the monkey! To celebrate, just about every Chinese restaurant in the UAE is offering a week of special deals. For example, from 7-24 February Zheng He’s in Mina A’Salam will deck the halls with lanterns, host live Chinese dance performances and give out iconic ‘red packets’, which will be filled with prizes and vouchers for diners. Guests will also be welcomed with a traditional Chinese drink and invited to “toss the Prosperity Yu Shang”, a ritual that goes back to ancient China, where a salad of salmon sashimi with pickled veg in plum dressing is tossed in a toast to the New Year.
Key dishes are available to order individually and set menu selections include stir-fried Scottish scallops with shrimps and macadamia nuts, steamed cod fillet, roasted Chinese-spiced chicken, sizzling Wagyu steak and the classic festive dessert nian gao – pan-fried glutinous rice cakes with egg – which is considered to bring good luck in the year ahead.
INFO: Set menu costs Dhs350 per person, with a minimum order of two, 6.30pm-11.30pm 7-24 Feb, Zheng He’s, Jumeirah Mina A’Salam, 04 432 3232, restaurants@jumeirah.com

FRI 5 FEB

This big Brazilian brunch offers different seatings. Join any hour, on the hour, from 1pm to 9pm to begin your four-hour Carnival Party package, an all-inclusive brunch to be taken at a time that suits you. Following brunch, there’ll be a happy hour that lasts the rest of the night with house drinks from just Dhs25 (add just Dhs10 for doubles). Fancy dressing up? Think feathers, sequins and sparkles – there’ll be samba dancers, drummers and free-flowing drinks stations serving up Dubai’s largest selection of cachaça. Now go shake what your mamma gave ya!
INFO: Dhs350 per person for four-hour brunch including food and house drinks, Dhs450 including sparkling drinks, 1pm-1am, Level 9, Media One Hotel, 04 421 2679, reservations@spirito.ae

EVERY TUE
TRY THE TOKO NIGHT BRUNCH
We’re always saying it here at Ahlan! – there just aren’t enough good night brunches! We’re not sure why we call them ‘night brunches’ either, as they don’t take place between brekkie and lunch, but perhaps ‘all-inclusive evening buffet’ doesn’t roll off the tongue as well as the dishes at Toko roll onto it… Its weekly Tuesday night brunch hosted in the lounge has a cool Asian ‘izakaya’ street food vibe with DJ Valentin on the decks and fare such as Japanese Angus burger and soft shell crab with wasabi on the plates. Plus, ladies can enjoy two complimentary glasses of house grape or ‘twilight’ cocktails.
INFO: Dhs195 per person including two drinks for ladies only, 7pm-10pm, Toko, Vida Downtown Dubai, 04 442 8383, reservations@toko-dubai.com, toko-dubai.com

EVERY WED
PARTY TIL LATE AT TRE LADIES' NIGHT
Tre Times a Lady – we love what they did there! – is the new night at Nassima Royal Hotel on the SZR. Every Wednesday there’ll be free-flowing bubbly, spritzers and exotic canapés for the girls, accompanied by the rhythms of live percussionist Geo – plus, of course, the stunning cityscape views from this 50th-floor bar.
INFO: 8pm-2am, Tre Lounge, Nassima Royal Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, 04 308 0000, nassimaroyalhotel.com

EVERY WED
JOIN BUSSOLA'S 'SOCIETY'
Bussola Lounge is inviting you to join its ‘Society’, a new event aiming to become one of the most sophisticated evenings of the week with three hours of free-flowing Italian bubbly, grape and delicacies for Dhs275. Have you seen the recent refit? It looks gorgeous with its extended lounge and bar furnished with plush comfy seating and wooden decking throughout. Mediterranean beats and twinkling fairy lights add to the so-chilled seaside ambience. We think it’s going to be a hit.
