5 Amazing Dubai Classes To Spice Up Your Gym Routine

Tired of your regular gym routine? Looking for a bit of guidance but can’t afford a regular personal trainer? Yep, we feel you. So when we were invited to try out the classes at Dubai’s NRG Fitness, we didn’t hesitate.

NRG is an urban boutique fitness facility conveniently located in Dubai Marina. Situated on Marina Walk, it features three state-of-the-art training studios complete with advanced equipment, funky LED lights and a built-in sound system guaranteed to keep you pumped during your work out. It also boasts an impressive Ride studio, where you can enjoy a number of different cycling workouts that deliver maximum results with minimum impact on the joints.

NRG Fitness isn’t your typical gym. Instead it offers a wide range of stimulating classes including NRG Ride, RPM, Ariel Swing, Sprint, Pole Fit, NRG Core, NRG HIIT, NRG Run, NRG Box, BodyPump, BodyAttack and even Zumba.

Best of all? It’s all app based! You simply download the NRG app, check the schedule and book your desired classes. On arrival, you simply check-in on the tablet at the reception desk and you’re good to go! Being able to book on the app ensures you can plan your week (or month, if you’re THAT organised) accordingly, and it motivates
you to stick to your regime (because if nobody’s waiting for you, it’s easy to skip a session, right?).

And the technology doesn’t stop there. The NRG Fitness team is focused on helping you achieve your personal fitness goals by using the NRG System – asses, programme, track and support. One of the tools they use is the MZ-3 HR Belt, which allows the trainers to accurately track the progress and effort of your fitness journey, no matter where you are in the world. The MYZONE belt delivers heart rate-based effort tracking technology that allows you to monitor your heart rate during a workout. You can then view your physical activity data on a smartphone through the MYZONE App.

Team Ahlan! headed to NRG to try a variety of the classes on offer. Here are our top five favourites…

NRG HIIT

Difficulty rating: 5/5

These 45-minute HIIT (high intensity interval training) sessions deliver immediate results. NRG HIIT uses a unique sequence of body-weight or low-resistance exercises with training methods to optimise your energy output and get you the results you desire quickly.

As the name suggests, it’s intense. We’ve never sweated so much in such a short space of time, and felt like we deserve to drop a dress size after just one session. Truth be told, we were a bit nervous to go back, but after a few sessions we built our confidence and managed to keep up. If you want to burn a lot of calories really fast, this is it.

KO8

Difficulty rating: 3/5

KO8 is a revolutionary functional training workout that is not only amazing fun but is also guaranteed to work you hard and get you results.

Working with this specialist equipment makes each class different and targets all muscle groups to give you a solid full-body workout. Whether your aim is to lose weight, build strength or increase your fitness levels, KO8 covers it all. Thanks to the variety of ropes and cables used for the exercises, this is one of the most enjoyable and unique training sessions at NRG.

NRG CORE

Difficulty rating: 3/5

NRG CORE is a 45-minute strength exercise designed to toughen your core muscles, including your abdominal muscles, back muscles and the muscles around the pelvis (strong core muscles make it easier to do many physical activities).

NRG Core workouts help you sculpt six-pack abs, build core strength, and get rid of belly fat. While we might not have six packs just yet, we can see how regular sessions will change that. The exercises look simple, but when you feel your tummy burn to this extent, you know it’s working.

BODYPUMP

Difficulty rating: 4/5

This is by far our favourite class at NRG. Using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, BodyPump gives you a total body workout. In fact, you can destroy 540 calories or more in a single session!

If you want to race against time and get in shape fast, BodyPump is the workout for you. You can start with light weights (we certainly did, don’t worry), and increase it as you build your strength and confidence. Thanks to the soundtrack and repetitions, you’re lifting weights to the rhythm, really. And that’s what we call a fun workout.

NRG BOX

Difficulty rating: 3/5

This is a high-energy, boxing-inspired workout that is based on the regime a boxer requires to maximise his or her fitness. 

NRG Box has the potential to help you burn a whopping 900 calories during an intensive and invigorating session. So yes, it’s another sweat fest. You also need quite a lot of rhythm to keep to the different punches. This is a great one to bring a friend along to, because a lot of the work is done in pairs. If not, no worries – you’ll be paired with another class member who’ll happily catch your punches.
