The Dark Knight sells out on opening day
The new BATMAN movie is set to break box office records across America this weekend after first-day sell outs at cinemas across the land.
More than 4,300 cinemas are showing the much-hyped blockbuster and, at noon, on Friday - the film's opening day - leading Internet box office site Fandango.com had reported 1,500 sold out screenings in 400 cities.
Site bosses insist they have no more tickets for The Dark Knight until Monday. They expect the film to become the biggest online ticket hit ever.
The blockbuster has already scored two new records - no film has opened in 4,366 cinemas and the new Batman movie grossed a staggering $18.5 million from midnight preview screenings on Thursday night alone.
That figure shatters the preview record of US$16.9 million set by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of The Sith in 2005.
The film has gained more publicity since the death of HEATH LEDGER, who plays The Joker in the movie. He has been tipped for a posthumous Oscar for his role.
