America Ferrera honoured in community

Ugly Betty star, America Ferrera has been awarded a prize for her contribution to the Latina community.

The influential actress has been honoured with a Latina Leader award by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute - proof that frumping herself up with braces, specs and an exceedingly bad wardrobe isn't going unnoticed!

Ferrera, 23, took time out of her busy shooting schedule to receive the gong at the Washington Convention Center on Tuesday.

The diminutive actress, clad in a grey suit and heels, stood before members of the U.S. Congress and promised to continue to use her fame for the betterment of the "wider community", emphasising that she doesn't take her success for granted.

Ferrera - who features on Hispanic Business Magazine's 2007 list of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics - was recognised internationally this year with an Emmy and a Golden Globe award for best actress in a comedy for her role in ABC's English-language version of Colombian soap opera 'Betty La Fea'.
