Ahlan! looks east for a tropical summer treat
by Colwyn KidgerHas seeing the thermometers rise over the 35 degree mark already had you hankering for breezy days, a swim in the sea - with waves! - or just a day on the golf course that doesn't leave you expiring at the fifth hole? Then flee the desert summer for a few very bearable days in Bali.
When it comes to natural beauty, it seems this Indonesian island was given it all in abundant amounts. Verdant hillsides have panoramic views over a surfer's paradise, the mountains are a treasure trail of ravines, secret caves, waterfalls, hot springs and soaring volcanoes that are ready to rumble.
On the southern coast, the beaches of Nusa Dua are a hub for ocean action fanatics and the perfect base for those who'd rather hit the greens for a game at the Bali Golf and Country Club (one of Asia's five best courses). Head inland and you're in for a real taste of Indonesia, where life goes on amongst rice terraces overlooking the sacred Ayung River Gorge. A few days here will take you on valley treks past shrines (Bali has over 20,000 temples and palaces to discover), into the vibrant markets of towns like Ubud and through fragrant mango, coffee and clove plantations.
It's a journey to revive the senses... before you've even started on the massages the island is so famous for.
While you're there...
Find peace
Nusa Dua in southern Bali boasts many authentic Balinese-style resorts with all the five-star trimmings, like Amanusa (meaning ‘Peaceful Isle') where you can spend a few days on the Indian Ocean soaking up pampering treatments, while the boys unwind on the golf course. For the more traditional Balinese village-style experience, unwind amidst the paddy fields at Amandari resort (meaning ‘Peaceful Spirits').
Sail away
From the southern coast of Nusa Dua, charter a catamaran to visit Nusa Penida (renowned for its excellent diving) or the more secluded Nusa Lembongan. If that's a little too sedate for you, see the countryside at speed as you brave the white waters of the Ayung River.
Balinese baby!
The Spa at Amandari is the perfect spot to enjoy a Balinese volcanic clay body mask. Alternatively, go in search of the original Balinese Boreh - a Balinese massage created by rice farmers using a preparation of a paste of ground spices guaranteed to unwind any knots.
Tastes and temples
Get up early at Amanusa and take a trip to the local markets to shop for the freshest fare, then head back for a lesson on how to cook your favourite Indonesian dishes. And your trip wouldn't be complete without visiting the great temple of Luhur Uluwatu, one of Bali's ‘six temples of the heavens'.
