Granny hair

It seems rather odd that, despite spending hours at the gym, slathering themselves in anti-ageing creams and doing everything they can to stay looking young and beautiful, the A-list suddenly have no qualms about adding half a century to their looks by sporting seriously nannified hairdos.

Paris Hilton, Ellen Pompeo and Nelly Furtado are just a few of the stars who have ditched their usual dos for a rather more, ahem, mature look - and we're not entirely sure we're convinced. Bouffed to the max and saturated in hurricane-strength hairspray, the modern incarnation of former British PM Margaret Thatcher's 80s hairdo, seems to be the hottest look in Tinseltown right now. Euw!

From what we can make out, the bright young things of La La Land are minutes way from asking their hairdressers for a blue rinse and a lovely tight perm. And while it's clearly totally passe to have extensions anymore, having hair your gran would be proud of isn't a trend we'll be adopting anytime soon.

Whatever next? Hot milky tea and boiled sweets over bubbly and canapes at every A-list bash in town? Tartan blankets and double slippers on the catwalk? How very hip (replacement).

Pass the super-strength Elnett, I love this trend. Having plundered every other style influence - futuristic, retro, even retro-futurism for goodness sake! - it was only a matter of time before a savvy celeb hairdresser looked to nana for his muse and came up smelling of parma violets.

Forgive me, but the day I start taking my style cues from a pensioner is the day I'll also start wearing flat shoes and liking them... ie never! Why would you pay your hairdresser to make you look like Mrs Doubtfire just because Paris Hilton does? Duh!
