The year 2009 has not been kind to Akshay Kumar. All his big films have gone belly up in the box office, despite their hype. Worse still, the critics have panned Chandni Chowk To China, Kambakkht Ishq and Blue mercilessly. While Akki’s stunts are undeniably the best in Bollywood – with only Hrithik and Ajay coming somewhat close – his skills as an actor has always been limited. A grimace, a toothy grin and a glare – that’s all we’ve ever seen from Mr Akshay ‘Wooden’ Kumar. He did make it to the top courtesy a series of fun flicks, but now his luck seems to be running out. Proof: His lucky charm Katrina Kaif has moved on to act with the likes of John and Ranbir.

It’s not just Akshay’s fault that his recent movies haven’t worked. It’s their total lack of a storyline. Akshay is one actor who has climbed steadily through his own hard work, without a godfather in the industry. He knows his limitations and so stays within stunts and comic routines. Akki has no enemies and even Amitabh Bachchan has praised him openly. Good-looking, professional, uber stylish, earning in crores, he’s our one-man link to Hollywood. Which other Bolly actor has been in movies with Sly Stallone, Denise Richards and even Kylie? And now, Final Destination director David Ellis is planning to make a movie with Akshay. So don’t rule King Kumar out yet.
