Mauritius
Be enchanted by the Indian Ocean’s crown jewel
MauritiusUplifting, magical, beautiful – those are only three words that have been used to describe Mauritius, and rightly so! A little haven of peace and tranquillity off Africa’s east coast, the melting pot of cultures, past and present, make this the perfect getaway.
Experience the island culture with the super-friendly locals, or enjoy your freedom exploring the natural beauty of the lush volcanic landscape around you.
With Mauritius being an island, there’s plenty of opportunity to splash about in the sea, and a visit to Pereybère – one of the most popular beaches – is essential. Not only does it have pristine white sand, but there are great shops, restaurants and bars on the seafront.
Grand Bay is the place to go if you’re looking for nightlife, and the recently renovated La Cuvette beach is a delightful little island hideaway.
What you really want to do in Mauritius though is relax, because that’s the intrinsic vibe of the island. Peaceful, calm and moderate, Mauritians are eager to help out visitors however they can, often in return for a small tip of some sort.
Head to the central market for some shopping; located in Port-Louis, it’s a great place to pick up some local cari (curry) or dither (tea), in addition to herbs and spices galore. It’s been around since 1844, and has been the place to buy regional delicacies for well over a century.
