Is rehab the price of fame?
Kirsten, Eva, Lindsay and Amy - why are so many talented young women unable to cope with the pressures of fame?
Is rehab the price of fame?‘Miss Together' falls apart
Eva Mendes
Long seen as an ideal role model for young women, with her steady long-term relationship, her love of her curves and her well-thought-out career, insiders were shocked when the 31-year-old Latina star checked in rehab recently, without disclosing why.
What's her poison? Shockingly, insiders have recently come forward to claim that Eva is battling a ‘well-hidden' substance abuse addiction.
Where's she at? Having checked out of rehab after just a couple of weeks to "attend to some personal business in Los Angeles", Eva's rep says she'll "return to complete her treatment."
Fame to blame? Hailed as the epitome of curvy Hollywood, Eva's been handed the mantle of role model for many young women - largely because she's not a skinny size zero - which has piled the pressure on her. "She kept it all behind closed doors and wasn't really a mess in public," an insider told US magazine. "She has a lot of low self-esteem and body issues."
The young survivor
Lindsay Lohan
A Hollywood veteran before she reached 21, Lindsay's is a cautionary tale of too much, too soon, and the actress has seen her once-promising career take a nosedive and her credibility suffer.
And with her two stints in rehab, Lindsay's reputation has been blotted by her one day in jail, 10 days of community service, probation for three years, an 18-month alcohol education program and a three-day county coroner program in which she had to visit a morgue and talk to victims of drunk drivers.
What's her poison? "It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable, because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs," Lindsay said in a statement, last year.
Where's she at? Lindsay has been spotted drinking again on two separate occasions, with her pals enabling her to do so - "Once in a while, she chooses to have a cocktail," said one. But although the actress says, "When I look back on this last year, it's like, ‘What was I thinking?'", she also adds, "That's not to say I'll never go to a club again, because I'd be lying."
Fame to blame? Lindsay started her acting career aged 10, and much has been made of her pushy stage mum, Dina, and her absent father, Michael. And Lindsay admits her work load was huge, "I was going, going, going, and that ran me down... I hate being alone at night. I like having friends around me."
Self-destructive talent
Amy Winehouse
With her every move documented in the tabloids and a seemingly very badly chosen husband in Blake Fielder-Civil, Amy has seen her considerable talents outshone by her drug-taking - which she was recently caught on video apparently doing - drinking, public spats and tearful 3am wanders through the streets of London.
What's her poison? Drink and drugs and there's also a rumoured eating disorder.
Where's she at? Amy entered rehab at the end of January after Brit tabloid, The Sun released a video purporting to be of Amy taking drugs. Emerging after just two weeks looking far more healthy than she had in ages, Amy performed via satellite for the Grammys - winning five awards. And amid rumours that her incarcerated husband is petrified she'll dump him when she gets fully clean, Amy headed back to rehab.
Fame to blame? Crippling insecurity plagues the singer, with her arrival in the spotlight - where female celebrities are scrutinised for every extra kilo and imperfection - exacerbating her problems. "I'm very insecure about the way I look," she admits. "I'm a musician not a model. The more insecure I felt, the more I'd drink."
Party animal goes too far
Kirsten Dunst
The news that Kiki had entered rehab last week, came as a shock to her fans, but not to Hollywood watchers who have been au fait with the actress's love of partying for a long time.
With celebrity blogger Perez Hilton nicknaming her ‘Kirsten Drunkst', the blonde star's lifestyle spiralled out of control last week, with pals saying she checked into Utah's Cirque Lodge just days before they were set to stage an intervention.
What's her poison? Sources indicate that the 25-year-old Marie Antoinette star has an alcohol addiction and enjoys being the life and soul of the party, with her "carefree party girl antics".
Where's she at? "She's been crying a lot lately, a lot built up," revealed a friend. "Everybody hits that bottom where you feel [so] scared that that one heavy night of partying can really wake you up. It's good she's getting herself help."
Fame to blame? Pals have come out and said that the pressures that stem from Kirsten having been a child star have now affected the grown-up Kiki, as well as the "overwhelming media scrutiny" she has to endure.
"She's not doing well," a source spilled. "People were pushing her to go [to rehab], but there was no intervention... She has been partying hard for a while and I'm sure that the whole Heath Ledger thing put people over the edge."
