Think of an idyllic Grecian seaside getaway and you probably think of pretty white villages in the tiny islands in the south of the country, where rush hour is when two donkeys cross paths. But few people realise you can get the same tranquil beach escape on a sightseeing city break in Athens.

The Westin Athens Astir Palace Beach Resort provides the perfect base to combine soaking up the sun with soaking up ancient Greek culture. Situated just half an hour outside the city centre, the hotel is perched on a private peninsula with stunning views over sandy beaches, pine tree-covered hills and the clear blue waters of the Saronic Gulf.

Cool off in the large salt water pool, or jump from the cabana-dotted pier into the refreshing waters of the Aegean sea. The peaceful surroundings, coupled with the best Greek salad you’ll ever taste in poolside eaterie Kymata, make it a fave hang-out amongst Athenian fashionistas and visiting celebs (Paris Hilton’s ex, Greek oil heir Paris Latsis lives nearby!).

A short drive away, the delights of the city are waiting to be explored. Brush up on your Greek history at the New Acropolis Museum, which houses 4,000 artefacts dating as far back as the Greek Bronze Age. With panoramic views of the Acropolis from the floor-to-ceiling windows, it’s a great way to fully appreciate the enormity of the scared site, before braving the climb. The walk up the Acropolis is steep, but worth the views of the city from the shade of the mighty Parthenon at the top.

Also worth a visit is the ancient stone theatre Odeon of Herodus Atticus, located on the slope of the Acropolis, where you can catch the renowned Orchestra of Colours most evenings. Back down the slope, get lost amongst the meandering alleyways of the bustling shopping area, where you can pick up local trinkets and handmade glass – and sample the pungent local tipple in a traditional ouzo bar!

While you’re there...
